Dude was pretty much acting on programming. You can even see how as soon as he is threatened by the family members he starts killing them. It feels like the dude is just a passenger on a T-800 body.

no, but then again he wasn't right in the head at all. He obliterated everyone when he escaped. My interpretation is that the other dude wasn't killed in action, was taken also for the project and he did die there or while they were trying to escape.
That's what I love about this movie, doesn't spoonfeed or try to explain everything. We will never know exactly what the fuck happened with them and how he could survive.
