Hi guys I'm a projectionist for IMAX cinema.

Tested this bad boy out today.

I signed NDA with these things but let me tell you that you guys won't know what hit you with this film.

Beyond best of the year. Don't expect a war film. Much more a thriller. Less dialogue than a Refn film surprisingly. And I can't believe I'm saying this but Harry Styles steals the show.

Actually lots of twitter folk that saw advanced screening been saying that there is minimal dialogue.

Nolan has gone full beast mode. Unleashing DUNKINO

How does he get away with it?

Is that an actual IMAX film reel?

How many TB would that be?
>>
Why does /tv/ love to shit on Nolan but not the endless capeshit garbage or reboots or sequels that gets churned out by hollywood every month?

Big budget sci-fi, practical effects, original storylines, I don't see why you cunts hate him

>>84500541
About .700
thanks yiffy :)

Go back to /r/eddit, Chris. They appreaciate your work far more than this place ever could

that would be 700gb, yo.
>>

That's a big reel
>>

We shit on the endless stream of capeshit all the fucking time anon. At a certain point though it's just pissing into the wind; pointless.
>>
>>84500685
Can't wait for his score
>>
>>84500106

I'd rank it above all his work. This is try kino. Not sure how normies are gunna react though. Very experimental filmmaking. And like I said very sparse dialogue. Lots of visual storytelling. Seems Nolan took criticism to heart about his exposition and decided to respond to it.

Running time is roughly 100min including 7min credits. You'll be breathless by end of it.

Whatever you do see it in imax. 2/3 of the film is shot on IMAX (longest Nolan film use yet). Tom Harry plays character Farrier (Air Force). Goddam his scenes are spectacular. Aerial dog fights not seen in Hollywood since the days of Howard Hughes Hell's Angles but in fucking IMAX.

Seriously though, that motif is so played out at this point that it's now just distracting and clichéd. Hans Zimmer has been recycling his work for about 10 years

I'm waiting for War for Planet of the Apes.
>>
>>84501006

>>
My imax uses drives and files.
It's less magical.
>>
>>84499883
Also you're full of shit. Projectionists don't need to sign NDAs for screening films ahead of time it's part of their job.
>>
>>84501006
>>84501156

Zimmer has toned it down a lot for this film. No big and pounding sounds this time. Similar to that of Jokers theme in dark knight. Ratcheting up the tension. Ticking score from trailer is part of main theme that keeps building up to an incredible crescendo for the films ending climax.

>>84500994

Possibly. But I have a feeling general public are gunna not respond that well to it. Critics and film fans will love it though. Deffo sight and sound top 10 end of year list. Technical oscars for sure.
>>
>>84501357

Mine did. Like you say its unusual but Nolan likes to keep stuff tight from leaking.

For digital IMAX films, the film is delivered to cinemas on a hard drive. It's usually 1 to 2 TB, depending on whether it's a 3D film or not.
>>
>>84499883

Some excerpts from an extensive Nolan Dunkirk interview:

>(Smile.) Do not repeat it to the studio: it will be my most experimental film. By far. I preferred to make a sensory, almost experimental movie. Without dialogue. The soldiers have no history - at least I don’t tell it. Most of the crew didn’t understand why I was screening them The Wages of Fear. But it was the one that made the most sense. Which talks about mechanics, procedure and physical difficulties. I rewatched Pickpoket and Un condamné à mort s’est échappé, just for that. Bresson details everything, creates suspense with details.

>[Saving Private] Ryan is a film about the body, blood, fear of being dismembered. Fear is physical. Steven was able to create a visceral intensity of the experience of war. Dunkirk doesn’t play in the same category. It’s a movie with suspense and a race against time.

>It isn’t by accident that Heart of Darkness by Conrad is one of my favorite novels. It’s the purest form of geography and storytelling. Conrad never repeats himself, he sinks gradually into the depths of the human mind. Is it an inward journey or a trip out of oneself ? That’s the real question Conrad is asking. And 2001! And Dante! How to tell the trip ? This is the main question of cinema.

Basically the film is a suspense thriller about transporting a fuckload of people from point A to point B, not about the usual "war is hell" narrative.

>>
I live about 3 hours from the nearest imax
>>
>>84502766
That's probably because you have one of those trash digital LIEMAX theatres in your region that just got the brand IMAX sticked onto them.
You can't replace a 2 ton IMAX analog projector and a 98 feet high screen with your 13 inch Toshiba laptop or the room with perfect acoustic treatment and a sound system with multi-thousand watt amplifiers and speakers even behind the screen which has microscopic holes throughout for the sound to get through with your fucking Skullcandy headphones.
>>
Let me guess:
>muh British sailors saved all the allies
>good ol' Jezza in his fishing boat single-handedly brought home over 9000 brave british soldiers
>muh patriotism, muh queen
>'right ol' matey, let's bring back our boys!'
>'back home for tea and crumpets my lad'

And not a single mention of the French last line of defense as they fought and fought until they ran out of munitions, unable to escape to the beach as they fought to cover the retreat
>>

This.

Most people here will see it when the 700mb screener torrent get's out and watch it with one earbud on while simultaneously browsing 4chan and make a thread about it when they are 10 minutes in "wow this is boring".
>>
>>84499883

I remember when I was a projectionist, the middle parts of the film reels would trigger my inner autism and I had to flatten them. See how the inner rings of those reels pop out slightly? Well, I just had to push them back in. One time, I tried actually pulling an inner ring out and ruined the entire reel. It was a reel for Harsh TImes (2005).
My supervisor had watch the entire movie to test if the reel was ok, only to watch the projector stop toward the end of the movie. I think he stayed until 5AM.

Yep, cinemas get pretty much uncompressed sound and video. A blu-ray already contains a few hundred gigabytes worth of data, and an IMAX projector works with even higher quality.
>>
>>84502952
V good, way 'straighter' than other Wright films - it's nice to see he doesn't totally rely on goofiness, as endearing as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were. First film in the states, too, it felt like modern Americana.

the problem is theres an actual imax screen and projector in my city but they play NatGeo docs all year round with one hollywood/bigger film that changes every two months (it's in a museum, Royal BC Museum if any of you are familiar) , so it wont be in "IMAX" Imax in my city until awhile after the release. and im not gonna wait that long to see it, ill have to go to a regular theatre chains "imax"

Just the other day I had the realisation that my external HDD was about the size of a VHS cassette. But instead of like 7 hours of longplay or like 2-3 of the other format I had 200+ films on it.

Its pretty mad how tech advances in not a lot of time.
So maybe in another 10 years we'll have 200+ 1-2 TB film files on our personal external SDD's
