The monolith evolved him to the next stage of humanity which was a higher dimensional being able to witness time and space from a higher dimension. His physical body lived out his life in the space constructed for him by the monolith but his new perspective allowed him to jump from one time to another and witness his physical body existing from an outside perspective.

This sort of, the room the aliens put david in is a higher dimension so he sees the future present simultaneously. The room is decorated in modern and reinassance styles that clash because the aliens don't even care to know about things like this because they are higher beings and basically he's a lab rat.

The room decoration thing makes sense. I always figured maybe it was just stuff that was in his mind that they constructed it from, trying to make it what he liked.

I like his robe so much in that scene where he breaks the glass that I bought a very similar one ... but not exactly the same. If I was rich I would have someone make that robe, damn it looks comfy.
