I always got the feel the season was half the number of episodes it should have been.
I know it's objectively false but they were leading up to the yellow king from the first episode, dropped it in the middle, picked it up hot in the last 2.

firstly because b-movie stuff only gets you so far in terms of horror.
the horror element of the thing should be that everyone turns on each other and goes paranoid. bottin's effects aside it was a great film all together but not really... horrorful?
I think the prince of darkness was defenitely the better horror film. still the b-movie aesthetic doesn't really work in favour of the mood in a grand scale story like under the pyramids.
the tone has to be moody, to real to be true even. not just plain real.
Of all the people I'd say fincher would be the guy. He's not really in for horror that much (depends on ones definition sure) but still the element of the world being a insignificant piece of dirt in the universe is a thing that fits him very well.

Too many of his protagonists are already well-educated men with knowledge of the things they're looking for. They're also alone and the narratives rely on a lot of inner dialogue, so there's no way to explain to the audience without a narration or explicitly showing every little detail to force the inference. The Nameless City is a good example of that.

Dagon, The Ressurrected, and the black and white HPL Historical Society movies Call of Cthulhu and The Whisperer in Darkness are all pretty good or great even

I think trying to clearly define what Cthulhu is kind of defeats the whole purpose of the concept. There are hints here and there as to what it could be in The Call of Cthulhu and other stories, but it's never fully explained, and I don't think it's meant to.
