Shinji didn't just choose to leave Instrumentality to "save" humanity or "because its bullshit". He couldn't come to terms with himself, he couldn't chill - and when he was gone it was Asuka's term to address herself, and she couldn't do it either, so she left too.

You may not like Instrumentality as a narrative device or an idea (I think it's fucking scary), but the only people who would leave it are people who couldn't hang.

Alternatively, you could always assume Asuka was just the first of manner to slide out of the ocean because Instrumentality is breaking down (and it is breaking down, it was interrupted) but it's more than likely that after she was no longer used to confront Shinji, she and her own issues were addressed and she could find no closure anywhere either.

The things Shinji says have a different context in the English Dub. He comes off as a victim, a lot less of a bad person. He comes off as kind of pathetic, and confused. It's not just him, either. Asuka comes off as a lot more abusive and hostile. Or at least, in a way that comes off as unjustified.

In the Japanese dub, Shinji's voice work, particularly during his breakdown, emphasizes that Shinji isn't just angry or frightened, he's being spiteful. He's saying these things with the intent of causing hurt. You can hear it.

Shinji is not a kind person or a nice guy. He is not the savior of humanity. He left Instrumentality because he could not come to terms with his faults and weaknesses. He wasn't even willing to try.

At one point, he calls out the three main girls for being frustratingly ambiguous, and they retort basically saying that things are ambiguous about them because they have their own issues to deal with too. Shinji complains that this makes his life hard.

For a series that is pretty depressing to start, 3.33 was INCREDIBLY depressing. NERV was just a ghost facility with like 4 people. An integral part of the show(at least for me) was how awesome NERV was. A bustling sub city filled with people trying to save the world and futuristic high tech shit.
