the battle shows like 2 or 3 or deaths at the hands of these soldiers, mostly its just these guys getting slaughtered. The archers actually kill some things surprisingly, faramir is the only one shown getting kills in osgiliath, basically they were trying to make it look as grim as possible.

Gondor was far more competent in the books. It was so good that they essentially filled the role the ghosts filled in the movie and saved the day at the end.
