Mainly because his era sucked out everything Doctor Who is for me. There aren't any memorable monsters or fun eps. It's all in the writing - also BBC budget cuts. Not Capaldi's fault. That's actually the vibe I got at the start of Face the Raven when he puts the cards away and says "there's no nice way to say you're going to die". I thought that moment was wonderful, so all that was missing was the prior appearances. Definitely at least one more use of them would've been great to set it up, rule of thirds and all that jazz.

He's a theatre actor originally, Capaldi is a TV actor at heart. Slightly different styles. In theatre, you move your body around a lot, project your voice. That way people can see and hear you from the stage better.

In TV, the camera is focused on your face, so you try to do all your acting with your face, and projecting your voice is barely required (hence Capaldi and Eccleston whisper more, they're used to a boom right above their head picking up their every word)

The last time we saw John Simm's Master he literally stood with the Doctor and sacrificed himself to save his life, memorably telling Ten to get out of the way so no harm would come to him. I feel Moffat has forgotten what Simm's Master was actually like in his haste to tell this Missy redemption story. It makes no sense he'd be 'very worried' about his future after seeing Missy and the Doctor bickering in slow motion in a room considering he helped him the last time he laid eyes on him.

Every time I watch a new episode I'm constantly rooting for Capaldi to overcome the bland story, uninspired concepts and wet fish supporting cast with his acting and gravitas, it's less about "what fun and interesting story will the doctor take us on this time" and more "how can Capaldi best apply his talent to make this snooze fest watchable".
Never had that problem with Tennant or even Smith (opposite problem with Smith if anything).
