I think it's a once in a generation phenomenon.

There was massive hype surrounding these movies when announced and it generally managed to exceed expectations. This doesn't happen very often.

I went to see each movie opening night, all sold out showings with people dressed as elves/hobbits/etc with an amazing atmosphere. Will probably remain my greatest cinema experience for a long long time

Return was quite cgi heavy, Fellowship not so much except where it was neccessary. LOTR trilogy was great, i do hope they redo the cgi some day though since it was rendered in 1080p so 4K release is not possible and LOTR might be one of the few series where 4k might be beneficial because of the care taken with costumes, sets etc.
