The contrast between the mundane, the strange and the all-out soap opera-ish was a lot of what made the original series so memorable. These parts aren't "good", but they create a certain WTF contrast which I think ended up playing a role in the cult status of the whole series. They're not doing remotely the same thing. On a purely technical level, sure, Kubrick (and a bunch of others) filmmakers are lightyears ahead of Lynch. But Lynch is doing something different and creating a certain mood with his work. He's got his own thing and a very personal touch, and he takes more risks than pretty much any other mainstream filmmaker. And he's good at what he does. You're comparing different things.

Yeah, that's all part of it. The story is very important, of course, but if you want to compare filmmakers, unless they wrote the thing, you need to get more in the execution of it. (Of course, if the execution is bad, most people will find even a good story bad, and often vice-versa, but that's another matter.)

Not only do I not understand what I'm watching. I don't have any reason to care, other than the invested interest of the first two seasons.
I'm severely disappointed in season 3. It's just been a huge bummer.

Also, it's hilarious that David Lynch is in charge of sound, because he can't mix for shit. All the highs are too high, and all the lows are too low. And he loves using high pitched screeching noises. No wonder he plays a deaf character.

The new season so far has come off as masturbatory. And that's giving David the benefit of the doubt that he's not regressed to amateur status. No, flashing sounds and high pitched screeching noises don't invoke any feeling, other than annoyance. All he's doing is wasting time, showing a bunch of imagery that might have been pretty cool in 1980-something. But by today's standards, aren't impressive enough to justify their time on screen.

He doesn't even incorporate the music in a smart way. He treats it like they're playing on a late night show. Rather than integrating the music into the show. He's just filming live music for the sake of filming live music. Pure indulgence.

I can't even express how let down I feel by this season. I'm so fucking disappointed.

This is the first time he's got to do something this long form with full creative control. In all the other scenes the boy is normal, except briefly at the convenience store meeting where he pulls the mask off. In that appearance he also pulls the mask off to reveal the monkey face behind it.
