Yeah, unfortunately I think (and I'm sure netflix thinks the same) that a faithful adaptation of Misa would ruffle a lot of feathers. Personally, if I had to change her, I'd probably make her a rival to Light with her own vision for the world and another player in the game that he has to defeat. That way American women get their "we're not just sidekicks" and the story doesn't devolve into YA novel tier.

Honestly though the only purpose of the Misa character is to show how much of a sociopathic asshole Light is, and I think the story works best as originally presented. That he would use and throw away someone who presents him with unconditional love demonstrates what kind of guy he is in a powerful way.

Part of me wants to give it a chance as a death note fan in general, and understands that changes are natural for adaptations.

But on the other hand, it feels like they've changed so much that it's alienating fans of the series because it's too different from what made them enjoy the series in the first place.

Personally, if they were just going to Americanize it anyways, I would have preferred if they had just adapted the LABB Murder Case instead.

They missed the entire point of the protagonist seemingly being a paragon of what everybody considers to be a model citizen. Light was the top student in the nation with 10/10 looks and came from a upstanding family but he's basically a sociopath with a god complex that believes everything he does is justify. One of the best aspects of the anime was seeing him slowly descent further into madness while being absolutely sure that he's doing the right thing.

L is also off in that in the show he's basically always cool, calm and collected except at one point where he's testing to see if Light can kill him in a certain scenario and he doesn't really seem to be like that in the movie at all.

Eh it could have gone either way. It's mostly dumb luck and possible an educated guess by Ls part. There's a lot of ways where it could have or couldn't have worked. Even if it didn't work L would have just tried to think up a new method. L wasn't going to just give up if this didn't work.

I mean for all he knew Kira wouldn't be next to a television set until after the broadcast was over meaning he'd miss him. He's basically throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks because he's currently operating with nothing going for him.

That said the fact that he gets that lucky is basically considered fine by the viewer because he -never- gets that lucky again and he ends up losing because of that simple fact. In a real way the point of Ls story in death note is that sometimes it doesn't matter how smart you are. Sometimes you're going to find yourself in scenarios where you're just fucked. (Which is also what ends up happening to Light).
