So, was he a diddler, or no? He looks like he likes children to sit on his lap, but then again his personality goes against it.

It's just personal opinion, Annie Hall was first Allen film I've seen, and I was really impressed by it, so probably I couldn't enjoy others as much. Play it again Sam was okay, but everything else not so much. I love his music choice in films, though.
And he did left a huge impression on other Hollywood filmmakers, too, him and Scorsese with Taxi Driver, but they actually drew a lot of inspiration from European directors, especially the French like Godard. Too bad Hollywood has gone to hell during the 80's, sure there are some great films, but it's simply not the same as it used to be, unlike European filmmakers. You can see that in La Haine, the film was made in '94, but it shares the same form and ideals as Nouvelle Vague.

I mean, how can you like Annie Hall and dislike Hannah and Her Sisters, or Husbands and Wives, or Crimes and Misdemeanours?

I don't know, they just felt lazy. But I have seen these only once, so I'm thinking of rewatching them.
