I rewatched the last episode of Twin Peaks S2 last night and it's markedly better than anything in S3 so far. Everything is timed and acted to perfection, and very simple visual techniques are used to create an atmosphere of extreme chaos and horror. I am enjoying S3 but some of the things in it are just..... CLUMSY, and should have taken place off screen, or not at all. There's a real lack of subtlety.

Really the idea that Twin Peaks is lighthearted is still beyond me. Quirky fun shit makes up only like 30% of the show.

Beyond that it's a really, really dark and depressing story about the affect of someone's murder on the community, and even worse, the affect learning about how horrible that person's life secretly was.
If anything I don't miss LE COFFEE AND PIE meme stuff from the original, I miss all the characterization and the absurd ways the plot moved forward.

I honestly see season 3 having that contrast still
and I enjoy the movie for being dark and disturbing, whilst still enjoying the whole duality theme of light and dark in the original series too and the impact that it leaves when the soap opera stuff suddenly stops and you get a horrifying scene with Bob suddenly crawling through the living room or just moments at the end of an episode like in the hospital with the music setting the tense atmosphere and tracking shot down the corridor, before Ronette Pulaski screaming and seeing Bob kill Laura in her head
the false sense of security makes it even worse, but I also love that there was a definite self-aware tone shift, starting with the movie and into season 3, due to the ramifications of the season 2 finale
