I've thought about this and I think I figured it out.

You know how in medieval movies a peasant will do a favor for a noble and the noble will toss the guy a pouch with an indeterminate amount of money? Well the peasant just runs off with it without even counting and I think the implication is that whatever amount is the pouch it is way too much.
