Full length animated Japanese films have really good animation though, but for anime 90% of the budget is spent on ~~KAWAII~~ idol voice actors and animators are getting paid scrap. I remember being like 10 and watching Pokémon 4ever and getting blown away by how much better the animation was than in the show

I don't know the cultural reasons, but Japanese actors have a really hard time being subtle when it comes to displaying emotions (especially with facial expressions). Comes off as straight-to-tv b movie acting for us Westerners. Maybe THEY perceive it as good actign though?

I'm guessing it's a mixture of:

1) Cultural emotional differences. The way the west convey emotions are not the same the east does. Acting like how people do in Western films feels inauthentic and unnatural to Asian actors (and even some Northern European ones).

2) Extent to which the nation's (sometimes revised) cultural identity wants to assert itself. This happens for American films too, with the America FUCK YEAR, cocaine fueled military, American-is-predominantly-a-judeochristian-white-anglo-country-and-not-a-mixture-of-multiple-cultural-identities, 'muh stars and stripes', and land of freedum narrative that surfaces occasionally in movies like Transformers and most capeshit. In the east it has a more subduing effect with regards to its actors and encourages them to act more conservatively.

3) No (western) classical training for their actors/actresses. I doubt most of their actors have actually undergone formal acting training. You still see this discrepancy between British and American films though to a much smaller extent, with British actors being the best and second to none. American actors are usually one-note, they play only one role convincingly (usually a role similar to their own true personality) and that's it.

4) Different criteria and expectations for their celebrities. I think it's important to make the distinction between celebrities and actors, because a lot of the people in Asian films are actually just Asian celebrities taking acting roles. True Asian actors do exist, but the number of celebrities outnumber them in greater proportion than they do in the west. Asia doesn't care to make the distinction because their audiences want to watch beautiful people first and foremost. Ability to act is simply not a high priority. Western audiences are more forgiving on ugly people acting in dramatic roles (though not by much).

Another thing I'd like to bring up is that the way that people act in Western films is NOT how people behave in real life. Very, very far from it.

* When you boil it down, the way people act in (western) movies is a socially accepted meme that us western audiences have "bought into". The mannerisms and personalities are incredibly fake and contrived but have come to become accepted as real personalities and behaviours because they shadow what other movie characters have done in a long tradition of movies. Movie characters are simplistic reductions of real personas even at their best. Even touted 'multifaceted characters' in movies are at most a simplified form of real life personalities. Everyone in real life has a grey personality, most of the people in movies are black or white and when they're grey it's usually as simple as the protagonist/antagonist having done something bad (or good) that is redeemable/unredeemable. The simplest human being is infinitely more complex than any character ever in a movie.

* The more you buy into the culture (i.e. the more movies you watch) the more the differences between how people behave in real life and in movies become blurred. It becomes apparent though when you see people in real life unconvincingly act like how people act like in movies (you see this a lot in developing adolescents, specifically in the way they talk). It comes off as inauthentic. In the case of children they are trying to find their voice or persona.

* The memery above develops basically into character archetypes. Vin Diesel's character in F&F, gearhead gangbanger with a heart of gold - doesn't actually exist in real life. There are people who try to imitate such characters, but some of them live with their mother's, some of them have no idea how technology works, some of them are in love with their cousins, some may not know how to navigate specific social interactions or are otherwise deficient and different in a million different ways.
