I really don't get the argument "this movie should have been this and not that". That's a different movie, a different story, it would explore different themes. The director wanted to make this movie, about Redmond Barry acquiring the style and title of Barry Lyndon and then about misfortunes and disasters which befell Barry Lyndon. Watch something else. Also, I found the second part, though not as entertaining as the first, quite good.
