Despite being a full-on action movie, it felt 'slower' than Wright's other movies -- there was a lot of clever stuff, but it always kind of showed you everything twice to make sure you got it, which ended up stepping on the effect of some of the action/emotional beats. Like, the surprise gore or having the bad guys show up at the diner works once, but the next time they happened it didn't feel like an escalation.

Also spacey becoming a good guy out of nowhere was sort of dumb and I really didn't like that the final big car chase is them going 5mph in a dark cgi parking garage.

In general, I dunno if the slightly more serious tone suits Wright. I usually really enjoy his just-so compositions and timing, but here they felt unconfident, like the action and characters couldn't speak for themselves.

Just got back from watching it (gonna post spoilers to prove). It might be the most forgettable edgar wright film by far. Baby honestly has like zero charasima even with him being forced on the audience with his shitty singalong parts. Literally could not give a single shit about him and most of the musical parts were just painful in general.

At least there are nice waifus in the movie.

Actual Spoilers: He goes to prison, she sends him pictures of her driving about. He hangs up a route 66 postcard
>>
>>84390040

This board starts screaming "shills" is what he meant I think
>>
Just got back from a Leicester Square viewing. Was pretty good all around, quality soundtrack synchronisation.
Obviously Baby was a bit dead as a character, but that's the entire point -that he's traumatised so much by both the childhood accident and his tinnitus that he's essentially mute. That makes it all the better when Debora comes in.

Won't deny it dropped the ball a little in the last act though.
>>
>>84388526
Scott Pilgrim isn't a very good movie, man. It's a pretty vapid flick that coasts on its visuals
>>
Saw it today, pretty solid though the last act is dumb as fuck and the situation that sparks it only happens because Baby is a true autist that can't stand Jamie Foxx.

It was a nothing movie that looked cool. The writing isn't very good and the movie as a whole relies on references and a relationship saga that isn't interesting in the slightest, especially since the main character (and most of the characters) are unlikeable. People don't not like it because it's "Reddit", I like some "Reddit" movies but Scott Pilgrim just isn't very good
But honestly it does have too much quirkiness that wasn't charming at all when I saw it a few months ago, but maybe it was fresh in 2010

The 80's were the furthest thing from any of that.
>>
>>84386555
I think it being slower is due to it being a more serious and straight action movie, rather than a parody or honest comedy. Because of that he can't rely on his jokey whip pans and smash zooms.

I kinda agree with you on the final fight, but at the same time Hamm's just such a damn good villain that I'm okay with it.

Just got back- pretty good film, i liked it. Not really a masterpiece, or as masterful as it was hyped up to be, but a good movie, and a great flick. The script/dialogue was a tad undercooked. Jokes didnt really hit, its structure wasnt so elegant. But the lead was suitably charismatic. Foxx was pretty threatening, and Hamm was great. Was mad he went out to fast, glad he had a comeback.

'Buddy, Darlin' prequel when??
>>
anyone else seent it?
>>
I loved it, found it incredibly enjoyable and full of life and vigour. Possibly the best movie of 2017 so far, though a few of the characters were missing an exposition, most notably "Buddy". I also didnt like Spacey's character, at all, he is quite poor in this. But for what it was, it was very entertaining
>>
>>84395219
>a few of the characters were missing an exposition, most notably "Buddy"

What do you mean? Not being facetious, just wondering. I kinda like how his backstory was hinted at in such a brief, intense way. Baby was cool, was Buddy and Darlin were sort of more interesting. Spacey was effective I think, i mean, i fucking hated him, but you're supposed to.

I wanted to learn more about him, Jon Hamm was brilliant but I wanted to be invested in his character a little bit more. I kinda wish Spacey's character would have been more ruthless too. Also Jamie Foxx was suprisingly great in this, felt nothing but pure hatred for his character.
>>

We definitely could've learned more about the heist crew. As much as they were in the film we get no exposition from them, other than the fact that Darling and Buddy are a couple. I also wish we got more of a reaction from Buddy when Darling dies. Bats got more of a reaction, and he was an asshole.
>>

Why did Kevin Spacey give Jamie Foxx more jobs after he killed Jackie Chan? And why did he let him do the final job after he killed a room full of cops, who were working for him, and who were in a meeting arranged by him? There's no way he believed the "they shot first" line. It made no sense that not only did Jamie Foxx walk out of that meeting, but that Spacey trusted him to carry through the job, especially when he had no issue with Jackie Chan's death. Especially with all the talk about how "what? is me taking Baby on the job not enough to vouch for him?" By the end his judgment was clearly trash.

The premise, plot beats and tone say otherwise. Saw it in theaters, came out same day as Expendables so it pretty much lost all the people that had nothing better to do that weekend.

The movie is kino

Is it a coincidence that after leaving Ant-Man he made a Heist movie?
>>
Is it actually funny or is it World's End """"""""funny"""""""?
>>
>>84400236
It's not really funny. I liked it, but the humor was more quirky or outrageous. Not unlike TWE.
>>
It doesn't try to be a comedy. It tries to be a musical and a heist movie and it does both perfectly.
>>
>>84400236
it's an action/heist movie so not really. Did chuckle at some parts.

Yes, the general thrust of the film is "around blacks, never relax."

>>
>>84385853
The Trailer looks like a parody of Drive (and that Edgar Wright is the director and writer also let look it like a parody), but everywhere else I read that the movie is actually a serious heist movie.
I don't get it, it is half parody half serious? Because the inspiration is pretty obvious.
>>
>>84404074
It's a crime film about a kid in over his head, told as a sort of car chase music video of old FM hits.
>>
>>84404074

The parody aspect is literally 0%. The character is a slight nod in his conception, but the execution is completely different. He's a quiet crime driver. That's it. There are no other connections to Drive.
>>
It wasn't as funny as his other films, but it didn't really try to be.

This movie is a masterpiece of editing and not much beyond that. It's a solid and fun heist movie with an engaging and shifting plot throughout. You should see it if only for the use of music. It's literally genius.
>>
>>84404196
>>84404188
Ah, I was in the wrong, according to IMDB he took inspiration from Walter Hills "The Driver".

Which is basically the same because Refn almost remaked the whole movie and "The Driver" was not overstyle 80s stuff (because it's a 70s movie), but Baby Driver looks like they reference the 80s a lot, like Refns Drive.
>>
>>84404298
Yeah, in the action sense especially, but a lot of the music and aesthetic recalls motown, soul, doo-wop, even 50s americana

No, it doesnt really. They both just happen to have that crime/noir setup of wheelman ,but not exclusively. This is a lot more actual (really well done) driving, and poppy sorta musical rhythm to the action. Drive's like a genre fever dream.

I agree OP
>>84386555
I disagree about the pacing, I thought it was perfectly fine. I do agree that the showing things twice thing was kinda odd, and agree with the Spacey part. I can see why, but he also threatened to break his legs and kill everyone he knew, so it still is kinda dumb. Although, I will say I love Edgar on a slightly more serious tone, I thought it was really cool, some of the scenes were pretty suspenseful. I didn't mind it, but it is definitely different from everything he's done. But that's what I love about Edgar Wright, he's new every time.
>>
>>84406327
Well yes but who provides the material for the actors to work with and responsible for directing said actors, whether blocking scenes or providing acting tips when necessary?
>>

>>
>>84406767
it is tho (not op)
>>
>>84385954
I liked the use of Boards of Canada and that one blur song
>>
It was good, the actor did his best w/ the material, and while i don't love The New Yorker's Anthony Lane, he kinda has a point here:
>The regrettable truth is that Baby’s a dull boy. “Aren’t you mysterious?” Debora asks. “Maybe,” he says. Or maybe not. His voice is papery, he appears to think that sunglasses are still chic, and, if his movements have any snap, it is supplied by the editing. Though the screenplay gives him a halfhearted backstory about being with his parents, as a child, when they died in a car crash (and that would make him want to become a driver?), most of his motives remain a blur; given a chance to flee, he hesitates, not because, like Ryan O’Neal in “The Driver,” or Ryan Gosling in “Drive,” he runs in some existential groove of his own devising but because he’s barely a character at all. He’s an agglomeration of tics and style tips.

Movie was instantly ruined for me when SPOILERS the cops didn't recognize Buddy in the diner. That faggot's face would have been plastered all over the place. How was he not recognized?

It was pretty decent, I recommend it. Don't judge it by the trailers. Wasn't a huge fan of the ending, it was a little lazy.

>>
>>84408713
On the tv playing near them, it's said that 3 out of the 4 were identified, Bats and Darling who were dead and Baby
>>
Kevin Spacey's character was a mess and I didn't like the ending. Having him be deaf or hearing impaired would have had more of an emotional impact, imo.

That being said it was an absolute joy to watch. Incredible editing, the best I've seen since Shin Godzilla.

I fucking hated the way Baby would dance around during the first half of the movie. It was so god damn cringey i almost walked out. But Lily James being so pretty and all made me stay, as well as the performances of pretty much everyone but Elgort.
Good thing i didnt because my god did the second half blow me away and all the things i disliked were totally absent.
>>

Really confused me that a) Baby was taller than Don Draper in the elevator, and then b) when he turns out to be like 6'3" in his mugshot

>Having him be deaf or hearing impaired would have had more of an emotional impact, imo.
Yeah, what the fuck, Buddy shot near his ears after he said he was going to take something he loves, then the scene in the car with Deborah has the sound muffled and Baby puts his hand on the car speaker as though he's feeling vibrations for a song he can't hear normally, but then Wright just drops it and he's normal again
>>
>>84385853

>>
>>84398106
He killed jackie chan because he jeaprodized the mission by leaving his shotgun. So did baby but baby's in the good books so he's safe. I assume spacey's main interest is the money and anything that comes between that is an issue, like chan. He was ok with doing the mission after Foxx fucked up because he, once again, wanted the money. This is how I understood it at least.
>>
>>84412383
He was ready to cancel the mission, though. He was in fact all set to cancel the mission.

Also it was retarded to even have the "lol I dont use the same crew twice" when he immediately called everyone back.
>>
>>84412185
There was one short cut in the prison where a doctor was inspecting his ears. People fire guns with out earpro and, i'm sure it's not a great time, but I don't think it's permanent deafness. He was touching the speaker in the car because that was hours after Ham shot near him.
>>
This movie was ass and overhyped. The romance is fucking obnoxious and annoying, I didn't buy it whatsoever and it took too much screentime and ruined the ending (the last 15 minutes were horrible and everytime they flirt I wanted to leave). The actors phone it in (Except Jon Hamm who atleast tries to show range but becomes cartoon evil).

They should have made this before Drive, this is an even more mainstream version of Drive with a shittier ending. The plot is somehow worse. This is definitely a leddit tier film
>>
>>84412519
>This is definitely a leddit tier film

Also the main character isn't a cuck or a numale, and the lead actress isn't autistic. I an only assume you're speaking in buzzwords. I hope you don't speak like this in real life.
>>
>>84412647
I didn't criticize the movie for being leddit. I criticized it for having an awful romance and ending as well as bad acting.

I will laugh at people who hype it up because there's a demographic I know this movie will appeal and blindly overhype despite the flaws to and that's the leddit demographic
>>
>>84412693
You didn't criticize the movie for being reddit, but you called it reddit-tier. Actually you called it leddit-tier. I just wanted to understand what that meant, and your qualifications seem bizarre.

Weird thing to choose to spoiler. A better one would be that Jamie Foxx doesn't trust him throughout the movie, while Jon Hamm is a bro, but once he gets Hamm's wife killed on a botched job (muh one last job) and kills Foxx, Hamm starts hunting him and his waifu down. Spoilers: they get away after he goes to jail for ~5 years.

It's a weird take on "riding off into the sunset" if you have a time skip in the last 5 minutes of the movie while the MC is in prison for the events of the movie then leaves. Probably would have been better if it was ambiguous to his fate after he said "This life isn't for you" to her on the bridge. Showing all the people in court saying he was decent felt like a send up of the Seinfeld finale.
>>
>>84413031
Are you just trying to be edgy and spoil the movie for people?

Also Jon Hamm isn't a bro at all in the movie, he's a nut.

Also also, they should have had the woman in court who got her baby back from the car.
>>
>>84398106

This. Baby (Miles) had a chance to describe what happened to the boss, and he... did nothing?? That's basically aligning himself with the clearly unstable Bats. You're not "ratting" on someone when they fucked up a job and your boss asks what happens.

But even stupider what Spacey's hard attitude, all the way until the end when he told Baby to fuck off, then saw that he was in love, then took an elevator down with them and shot baddies with an SMG??? What the fuck??? Honestly the plot device lends itself to a "Good luck, Baby. This is my floor" or something but instead the big careful boss steps out in front of the person who fucked up the job because of emotions??? What the fuck!

That being said, I enjoyed the movie. I saw it at one of those booze theaters and had 6 beers during the flick and had to piss so bad in the latter half of the movie but it was good enough for me to stick around.

It's worth seeing.

>your girlfriend looks nice. Lets keep it that way

They really fucked up by not having some more in there. They already set up Bats as being able to tell when people was lying. Have Spacey threaten to do some shit to the kid and have Bats call him out on it. Easy scene that would have taken no effort, especially when they already had a scene with the tapes that made sense.
