Haven't seen the UK version, the meme's are annoying and the last few seasons were a bit pointless, but the characters are lovable and Steve Carell is amazing throughout its entire run, among other things.

I agree. I re-watch the entire series about once every 2 years.

Nearly every single one is a total asshole.

Carrell is only amazing in how he got away with ripping off Will Farrel for so long. He is shit at comedy.

Weirdly, the few dramatic roles he's been in, he's been awesome.

If you watch the show in its entirety, you become attached to them and they have moments of emotion that humanizes them, specifically with Michael, Dwight, and Jim. I suppose all comedy is relative, so I respect your opinion, but I personally find Steve Carell hilarious in this show specifically, not speaking on any of his other performances.

Michael Scott is a total prick.

He's not some goofy-trying-to-hard-heart-of-gold-misfit. He's a complete fucking asshole that would torment everyone around him if they stopped laughing at him for a second. Don't believe me?

- How he pisses on Justin at the job fair
- "Ugly Scientist" Pam
- What he does to Holly's Woody
- Spending the surplus on a fur coat
- Trying to fuck over Jim with the promotion
- etc etc etc

He's not a loveable goof. He's a mean self-absorbed motherfucker that would be hated if sucking so much didn't given him some faux pathos.

Most of the "nice" characters have similar issues.

Primarily, this is because the writers didn't bother to pay any attention to their own show. They commented how they were shocked when people were pissed at Toby. Only when the fucking audience explained to them that he was abusing his position to try and hit on Pam did they go all: "Whoa....missed that one."

It might be fun to watch, but it sure as shit ain't because the characters are loveable.

Like most American shows I enjoy they just kept milking the show until the characters were barely recognizable to the original.

In an interview, the writers, showrunner, etc said they couldn't figure out why people started to hate Toby so much.

When the started looking at tweets, blogs, comments, etc they were astonished to realize that they'd spent several episodes having Toby try to fuck with Jim with HR bullshit because he was into Pam.

Then they went on to say how that that thought had never occurred to them.

It's six kinds of fucked up when a shows writing creative staff has a collective memory of about two scenes.

In my experience with the show, I grew attached to the characters and was able to forgive them for their flaws. Michael may have been an asshole a lot of the time but you start to understand why and can see that it's due to his insecurity and place in life.

Bullshit, bullshit, and again bullshit.

They *tried* to write it like that, but what he does is far too viscious. If you watch the whole thing it's clear that he thinks of himself as super-alpha-awesome-guy who's entitled to humiliate and maltreat anyone weaker.

And he takes every single chance he gets to do just that. It's not a little bit, he goes full sadist instantly whenever given the chance.

Jim: a perpetual slacker who thinks he could accomplish brilliant things if he bothered, but generally can't be arsed. Expects that he's charming enough to get away with anything.

He's wrong and is shown several times to be so.

I don't think the writers did this on purpose, I think they fucked up their characters because they weren't very good at their jobs and most of the audience looks the other way.

If you watch the whole thing more than once it's clear that all the "main" "nice" characters are vile.

Debatable, Sunny has extremely funny moments and episodes but it lacks any kind of true story, just kind of fucking around every season. The office is a bit similar in that respect but things progress each season, i.e. new characters, new plot lines, etc.
