inb4 the inevitable more like the lost city of zzz
I thought it was a good film but dragged down with pacing/script which will be the most common complaint I imagine
but I'm a sucker for these type of films so I loved it also the music was great
Some parts felt little rushed. The first journey felt like it went from day 1 to "we're all starving and diseased" in a single cut, and I think some other character moments in the script were a little too abrupt and unwilling to take their time. So yeah I think there were some pacing issues but obviously it's difficult in a story that spans years. Also I don't like Charlie Hunman
Ending was pretty messed up
I feel that the movie doesn't really start being good until the World War I section, and after that it's one of the best things Gray has filmed. Don't have many strong feelings towards it after that.

this.
for such a small portion of the film he really gave it all with the WW1 sequence
James Gray is one of the best ever to come out of America. Fucking love him and can't wait to see this film.
His next film sounds insane.

Next film is sold as heart of darkness in space with Brad Pitt playing an astronaut looking for a lost space explorer slash his father played by Tommy Lee Jones. Pretty interesting concept. Lost city of z was originally a project Pitt wanted gray to make but had to drop from and already had Conrad as influence. Gray is a huge Coppola and new Hollywood fanboy. I'm hoping this means hell finally get a better budget and popular recognition, respect from critics etc. His entire filmography is in a serious need of critical reappraisal for its thematic consistency and aesthetic excellence. He's a very mature and sophisticated filmmaker doing old fashioned genre films without irony or post modernism and has been stuck in Tarantinos shadow since the 90s because he was on the opposite side of what was trendy but its what makes his films timeless and age like wine.

I like how he thought, damn I'd like to explore the unknown (Lost City of Z) and then his next film (the space film) is exploration of the still yet unknown.
Yards and the Immigrant are great.hankiro?
