basically the plot will have a doomed hapless "innocent" I say innocent but they don't need to be like a saint just that through circumstances they get drawn into their doom while going about their normal life.

then you add to that some aspects of set dressing like shadows in the lighting, darkness. thus the "noir" which means Black in French.

It can be a fine line between a crime drama or thriller or murder mystery and true film noir.. but Eddie Muller is the one I think you'll find most informative
