I think the main theme in NCFOM is the pointlessness in trying to understand evil, and also the difficulty in understanding the world and it's development. TWBB is more of a character-study, showing a psycho, bitter man who can't connect with people, trying in his own way to show that he doesn't need to, but it's been a while since i've seen that one actually. That movie is not so much about the inherent meaning as it is just a beautifully made film in every way. You can't go into that on expecting just entertainment though, more fascinated/intrigued maybe.

I endorse this statement entirely. If you have 2 1/2+ hours to kill There Will Be Blood is a worthy film. However if you want that mood condensed NCFOM is the king.

True Detective is bizarrely similar, I mean they even use a bunch of the same actors. As far as slow, intense movies, Zodiac is pretty impressive. Drive also is up there for me, but far less well written. The Place Beyond the Pines is also pretty good.

I enjoyed how the decision-making through the movie is really well made, but I can't understand the sudden shift in perspective to Tommy Lee Jones character in the end. Dunno about Proposition or Salvation. Bone Tomahawk was ok, it had some really interesting elements going for it. Sadly, the pacing kind of sucks and it's overly long. Definitely worth a watch though.

As for that other tier, the only one I haven't seen is Lawless. At first I thought there was nothing really similar about these in relation to the thread but I see it now. They are decent, all within the 7-9/10 range. Sadly, NCFOM is a 10. I should just come to terms with the fact that nothing will ever top it. Seeing it in theaters was one of the greatest cinematic experiences of my life. Chills thinking about it to this day.

Really your best bet is the Coen's other films, particularly their earlier crime films which share NCFOM's nihilism. They have a remarkably different aesthetic to No Country but narratively are just as deft and deal with similar themes.

The problem with recording a suppressed gun shot - it just breaks the DB level that your conventional audio devices record at, so it "cuts off" the peak of the sound.
