That doesn't show contempt for the audience. It's just a small error that can easily be explained with the responses you were given. Picard being bald when he was bald in the academy is dumb, because he had hair in the earlier seasons of the show. They only did it because they'd think the audience wouldn't know who it is, even though the dialogue makes it perfectly clear.
