Same. he's supposed to be this heartless, cruel bastard, but you see he's just a guy who hates what he does and it takes a lot out of him. I love how upbeat and hopeful he gets when he gets published, writing his resignation and quitting smoking, only to fall right back into depression when the ending is changed and he realizes there is only one real place for him.

The mytharc strayed too far from the UFO mythology that had inspired it. The black goo and colonists stuff was kind of dumb, they should have kept the alien's motives mysterious and focused more on the government and the attempts to keep it secret.
