Didn't see a documentary thread up. Post your favorites or just good documentaries in general.
Saw pic related last night. Sheds new light on the gawker case and it's ramifications. Fascinating stuff.

Also saw this last night. Never heard of this incident, probably because I'm on the east coast, but this case is used in the FBI as training for what not to do. Dude was a radical ex green beret, would not go to court. Long story short they killed his son and wife and it ended in a week long standoff at his isolated cabin on a mountain peak.

No one on this board likes docs enough to warrant a discussion?

When you hear people shouting "Black Lives Matter" this movie is the cure of that nonsense

Haven't seen this yet, prove to me it's not simply Gawker still having a temper tantrum over Peter Thiel

Um. I'm shilling documentaries if anything. That's the whole point. I'm sorry if they seem so boring to you you feel it necessary to bitch and shitpost about it.

It's more than that really. It goes into detail about how the rich and powerful are trying to have some control in journalism in that instance and with Trump. Also features the Vegas Review Journal's buyout by casino barons. Though it does have plenty of them bitching about the case but it does analyze key moments.
>>84334579
It also talks about the precedent it sets and how it can give other wealthy individuals the idea to fight this sort of proxy battle with a media entity they may not like.
A masterpiece series on release

Gawker overstepped its boundaries all the time and the people that got fucked over often didn't have the capability to a New York media company to court, so Thiel aided them pro bono.
Cry me a fucking river.

I'm not saying they were in the right, but their collapse sent a warning signal to the rest of the industry. I mean we have a president with an openly combative relationship with an industry whose rights he is supposed to uphold an protect.
>>84335381
Blatantly lying and making up shit about the President is not protected speech.
>inb4 hurr trumpet that doesn't happen
CNN just fired three reporters for publishing an unverified and false story about the russian boogeyman
>>84335381
Has a single media entity gone under, either because they badmouthed Trump (as they do every day, sometimes on the hour,) OR as a direct result of this case?
The answer thus far is no. As desperate as they are to believe it, Trump instituting 1984 is simply not going to happen.
If you want to make the case about evil rich boogeymen controlling the media, the Gawker/Hogan case is the worst fucking example you could do. They blatantly refused court orders to take down a stolen sex tape they willingly published and had full knowledge of its origin and a jury decided they had to pay. I know it's cliche to say at this point, but stuff like this is exactly why Trump got elected, or at least looked better than his opposition.
>>84335494
No but when talking about the coverage of Terry Bolea/Hogan the pussy story bubbled back up and it showed that people were trying to spin it as though it was Trump's TV persona and not his own words, a defense similarly used in the gawker case.

Again, I'm not saying they were right, simply that they've been made an example of for a dangerous type of thought process. eg>>84334822

I think we're focusing too much on this single documentary whereas I made this thread for discussion of the genre as a whole.

That's your fuckup.
You're not going to find many friends of Gawker here and this documentary has been posted as bait for the past couple weeks.

So the dangerous precident that was set is that "If you do things that are illegal and will get you rightfully sued, there might be a rich guy that funds that suit so that you pay for the laws you broke?"
Just don't break the law then?

Good documentary. I was expecting either a le ebil white man diatribe or a /k/ anti government rant but they a lot of people from all sides who were actually involved and explained why things got so out of hand
