Why not appear from an underground trap and burst right in front of him and try to take him out, or run at him and try to shoot him only when he's under 5 feet away or something

There's plenty of reasonable ways to kill him, but then there wouldn't be a movie :^)

John would probably shoot the grenades if you think about it.

All they really need to do is make him fist fight a grunt wearing an explosive vest underneath. Just trigger it while John is grappling at close range.
