I think you misunderstand: while we didn't pay slaves, it cost owners a lot of money to raise them. They had to house, feed, and clothe a lot of them -- some of them from birth -- for years. That's not cheap at all, hence why people who owned slaves were in a serious minority.

I remembered I used to be afraid of even saying "The N word".
