I literally cannot recall a sex scene that didn't detract from the movie. It just makes me feel awkward if I'm watching it with other people, and makes me feel like the movie has essentially paused itself for a few minutes if I'm watching alone.

A literal infinite amount of porn exists in this day and age. We don't need dumbass excuses to have actors poorly pretend to bone anymore. Just stop, Hollywood.

I just had this discussion with my friend last night. There are no sex scenes that add to the plot of a movie/television program. If I want to watch sex, there are tens of thousands of porn videos online, I can watch anytime I want. When people decide to throw these scenes in, what audience are they trying to appeal to? How does it add to the story? I'd like a Hollywood film-maker to explain this. They could have created Orphan and through more creative story telling, explained the "woman's" sexual attraction toward the father without that couch scene. But instead, they wanted to get attention and create controversy.

This scene was necessary. The movie makes her entire plan and motivation to lead up to this moment, and the fathers response determines exactly if she kills him and the rest of the family.

Yeah sex scenes in general are pretty hard to justify. Cant think of one that I would keep in a film off the top of my head. Rape scenes seem more annoying though, since its clearly just a sex scene with shock value for extra publicity.

Most getting high/fucked up scenes are pretty weak unless done in some odd or unique way. Otherwise its masturbatory and boring as fuck.

And at this point most (not all) gore scenes seem redundant, maybe this is a more me thing but ive seen jut about every type of torture film there is and at this point long drawn out gore sequences seem like a waste of film. I guess this also includes drawn out gun fights but I think everyone gets tired of those at this point.

Most scenes are fine when they move the story forward or help expand upon an idea or character. A sex scene rarely does this. For example, the sex scene in American Psycho tells us that patrick bateman is a self obsessed freak who has no empathy for other people. This isnt exactly news for the viewer though and so feels unnecessary. I dont need to see him boning people to understand his character flaws.

Now granted I only said off the top of my head. Im sure there are sex scenes out there that are good for the story as a whole and deliver something important, but in my drunken and tired state I cannot recall any.

Simiarly I find drawn out gun fights to be boring as all hell. Short bursts of gun fighting is fine but when it takes up a whole scene.....well its just not very visually impressive and rarely NEEDS to happen. Where as other forms of combat can be more engaging but less necceasry like The Raid movies, which I love. Most of the fights in it arent really needed but more to show off the skill of the actors, which im fine with. But when im watching a film like The Accountant for example, the ending shoot out was far too drawn out and not needed considering the whole point was to help wrap up the ending confrontation.
