Alright. I get it now. Lynch didn't know where to put all the miscellaneous shit he'd been casually working on in his spare time since Inland Empire, so he decided to put it in a blender and slap the Twin Peaks logo on it. As a fan of absolutely all of Lynch's stuff up to this point, I actually have to draw the fucking line here. This revival is not a massive disappointment because "It's only for real Lynch fans". This is a disappointment because none of this footage actually holds an ounce of fucking power. The season's world hasn't been developed or grounded at all, so whenever a "weird" or "surreal" moment comes up, it means absolutely nothing whatsoever. The audience is not displaced. There is no shift. It is flat. Fucking monotone.
I'm mad, and I'm sure a lot of other people are too, but are just too afraid to say it because there's an army of rabid Lynch fans who'll tear anyone who dares criticize a single aspect of the show a new asshole. I do not give a flying fuck if the series is "building up" or "about to come full circle". Lynch is building a Jenga tower of borderline nonsensical plot developments on a base that, quite frankly, never even existed to begin with because it was never actually written in. Nothing in this season is tangible. It is as dramatically useful as air. It is gimmicky trite tossed in to please the lowest common denominator of Lynch-tards who do nothing but rave about aesthetics and drool over TP fan art on Instagram.

I actually agree with that guy. The problem is Lynch isn't doing anything to keep it grounded into that reality from the first two seasons. In those seasons, no matter how off the wall shit got, there was still tons of soapy character drama stuff going on to contextualize it. But Season 3 is just off the wall shit at all times and it really does detriment the tone and pacing of the show.

I don't know how much of this is accurate but I'll give it a go:
The bomb created a rip in "reality" or in time and space, it allowed some sort of evil to flood the world. That's where Bob came from I guess. "Bob" is the little bug/frog thing that crawled into the girl's mouth. A lot of people are speculating that she's Sarah Palmer, I'm not sure about that one.
When the giant got the notification or whatever about the bomb he knew he had to do something since evil came into the world and sent Laura but you already got that part.
I think reading Moonchild would help with understanding this since it's about a white lodge vs a black lodge.

I'm forgetting a lot and probably explained a lot you already know. I guess a rewatching would help us both. This episode definitely deserves one.

This I just flat-out disagree with. You can get surreal visuals, confusing and jarring psychoanalytic symbolism, and tightly constructed moments of off-kilter, weird Lynchian stuff in a bunch of different works. The difference is that Twin Peaks isn't any of those other films or projects, it's Twin Peaks, and it feels uniquely like "Twin Peaks" because of the characters and ambiance. I'm hardly one of the coffee-and-pie dumbasses, but acting like Twin Peaks is and always has been just a visual vehicle for Lynch to be bizarre is really obviously wrongheaded, and ignoring an important part of what made it so effective and compelling in the first place (at least in season 1).

It wasn't out of place at all. The bands play at the roadhouse at the end of an episode. Lynch used NIN to show that the "regular" episode was ending, and we were going into weird flashback/pure surrealism territory.

It would have been more out of place if we watched that bug crawl into the girl's mouth and then "PRESENTING, THE NINE INCH NAILS!"

Couple other initial thoughts. Sleepwalk was perfect ending to last episode. Feels like extended use of audio and visual cues could induce a trance like state in the viewer. Anyone else shake off sleepiness in the first half? That initial second shot at White Sands looked like Laura Palmer in the body bag. Platters song is perfect. Edward Hopper lighting all over the 50s scenes.

This is the Twin Peaks version of The Test Dream desu. Really good.

While I think I agree with you in substance (I'd still diverge and say that character-based storytelling is character-based storytelling regardless of what year you're writing, and it seems like Lynch has something a bit different in mind so far. It's the same sort of difference between FWWM and the first two seasons. There have been plenty of classic twin peaks moments in this new series all the people who hate this new season are just mad because Dale Cooper isn't involved in any of them. Cooper's arc is much more than that, he is one of the special people in Twin Peaks so you can't expect him to just come back and everything will be all fine and dandy. Also if they just brought him back right away it would weaken the fuck out of the original series ending. They chose to make Cooper suffer at the end and sacrifice himself if they just wrote that away by bringing him back all normal then the sacrifice would have been meaningless.

Lynch loves NIN , he wanted to put a entire performance of a song because he likes the music and their aesthetic, it works as an interlude but a 10 second shot of the woods of twin peaks would have worked better. But thats my opinion because i dont like NIN, i understand lynch's point of view.
