ITT: We reminisce about memories past

>got into bond films when goldeneye came out
>rented one every week for a while
>mom who is well aware of bond films finally initiates sex talk
>she gets scared and dances around the issue and i am left in ignorance until i accidently ejaculate for the first time 3 years later and realize everything she was trying to say
>>
>that blockbuster smell
>>
we didn't have blockbuster in my town, only rogers video

>t. a fucking LEAF
>>
wtf happened ?
>>
>be 5ish
>go to rent movies with dad
>accidentally walk into the adult section
>remember seeing the clerk drop his spaghetti in embarrassment

anyways, my mom would always take me to rent some cartoons, because we were poor and couldn't afford cable at the time
>>
>>84300104
My dad would pick me up from school every Friday afternoon and we would rent a video game and movie to watch together . In retrospect, he always picked movies he thought I would like even though he probably hated them. He just liked spending time with me. He'd also read the game manuals and try to give me tips while I played.

:( RIP Dad.
>>
>>84300281
Right in the feels but look on the bright side you got to have a dad around m80
>>
>>84300281

My dad died a year before I picked up my first video game ;_;
>>
>stay home from school one day because stomach was bothering me
>mom gave me some pepto bismol
>felt better after that
>so i eat a sandwich
>she wants to go get a movie so i go along with her
>get to blockbuster and walk around
>the smell in blockbuster starts making me nauseous
>uh oh
>throw up all over the carpeted floor
>try to run out but i can't hold the puke in so there's a trail of puke leading out the door

my mom still rented die hard 3 for us though, thanks mom
>>
>getting smeared, scratched DVDs from a store
No thanks.
>>
Hard to imagine that most kids in high school today have no memory or ever been in a Blockbuster
>>
>>84300189
I'm a leaf and we had multple Blockbusters in my town, A jumbo video and a Rogers video.
>>
>>84300281
my dad's dead too, but he didn't do shit but smoke cigarettes and watch sports. Still feel for ya dude.
>>
>>84300104
>Go to video store
>Walk into adult section
>Aunt sees me
>Get yelled at home

Also late fees was sometimes a problem.
>>
>>84300591
this
people ITT can get nostalgic all they want but if they actually went back in time they'd miss the convenience of streaming people are just idolizing a happier time in there life but you weren't happy because of Blockbuster you were happy because life hadn't severely disappointed you yet
>>
>>84300892

drunk op here. this thread is 100% about nostalgia.
>>
>>84300104
blockbuster was so great
>drive twenty minutes with sister and mom
>she wants to rent some stupid romcom
>I want to rent golden eye for n6k
>mom too cheap to rent a movie for her, a video game, and a movie for sis.
>leave disappointed and watch some shit movie
yeah man it was so much better than now
>>
I liked going through the horror movies at video shops, looking to sneak peeks at gory pictures on the back.

But now I'm grown I don't really like horror too much. Go figure.
>>
>>84300892
>if they actually went back in time they'd miss the convenience of streaming
I think when say they want to go back in time, they're implying that they want to do so without memories of modern convenience
>>
>>84300892
Everything feels like it went downhill after 2007

The recession, emergence of smartphones and the information era has taken a drastic toll on society

If you ever become a dad, don't fucking do this. Just spend half an hour playing the game while your son isn't watching. Later, bond with him over it. Everyone thinks it's cute that our parents were trying and failing to bond with us over our favorite hobby but it's fucking tragic is what it is.

Oh shit I watched Goldeneye earlier.
Easily one of the best Bond films, best Bond girls (Natalya and the weird sexual noises squeezing legs woman), and Sean Bean as the villain... 10/10.
>>
>>84300471
That isn't really a child appropriate film.
>>
>>84300104
Childhood confession.

>bought some spray at some place or another
>spray it in nearby arcade, clears it out for my bros
>get carried away, start spraying it everywhere.
>go to local blockbuster, w/ mi mum
>start spraying around the place
>anyone smell gas?
>as mi mum and I leave
>BB employees evacuate store, thinking NG leak
>fire department shows up, branch shut downed for nearly two weeks.

Felt like Actaeon, unintended consequences and all.
>>
>>84300892
i was also thinking about how much these kinds of threads are actual general nostalgia but it seemed like people appreciate things more when they are flawed or limited, it's more in touch with the human condition/experience. infinite choices and our modern culture of add make it hard to live in the moment. nowadays i can watch whatever i want in five minutes but end up just half-watching something and not really being mindful or fully immersed, whereas when i had a beat to shit vhs of something that i knew i only had the opportunity to watch once, it was a different experience.

I went to Blockbuster more, but my most prominent video renting memory involves pic related.

>At the time live real close to a Hollywood Video
>Every weekend my parents would take there, and each time I'd search for Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island.
>it was always checked out

I did this for months, literally get there around 7PM on Friday night, run right to the back wall and see if it was there
>it never was

Fast forward 10 years, and I am driving by this location, having moved away to a new house years later.

>The store is having a closing sale
Decide to go inside, see if I can find any good vidya or DVDs.

>They have a huge bin of old VHS tapes for $.50 - $2.

>Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island was in the bin

>didn't buy it

did I make a mistake bros?
>>
>Friend and I would mow a guy on the block's lawn for $10 every week
>Would immediately go to the Blockbuster 1/2 mile away and both rent a different game
>spend all weekend playing said games
>rinse and repeat for weeks until we decided not to do it one day because it was hot and the guy fired us.
>>
>>84302159
What? Blockbuster was alive and well during the days of DVD.
>>
is it just me or has moderation been stepped up here on /tv/ the last couple of days? Things like frog trope threads and obvious crossboard bait are getting deleted quickly.
>>
>About 2004
>Browsing the video games
>Hear someone rush in and up to the counter
>This guy looked pale from sweating(if that makes sense) and was out of breath
>Yells at the cashier "Do you have any girls gone wild tapes?"
>She only responds with "Umm, no"
>He starts laughing and tells her it was just a prank
>>
>Be 16 or so
>Day off school
>Take a bus to the city
>Walk some miles drinking coke and listening to music
>Get to Blockbuster
>Rent three or four movies with cool looking covers
>Rent some Xbox 360 games
>Copy the movies on my computer

Did this many times. Nothing really outstanding but they're still some of my happiest, warmest memories. That routine really made me happy.

I feel as though I need to clear some things up about why Blockbuster Video is closing, and why they went chapter 11 in the first place a few years ago

>Blockbuster Video used to be owned by a Jew owned company named Viacom
>Viacom are money-grubbing whores
>Viacom buys all of blockbuster's rentals and merch with loans, instead of profits
>every year use profit to pay off loans, take out new loans to buy new merchandise
>blockbuster decides to split from viacom because they are tyrants
>viacom takes all of blockbuster's profits from that year, but does not pay off the loans
>the loans were taken out under blockbuster's name, not viacom's, so the loans technically belong to blockbuster
>viacom does not tell this to blockbuster corporate
>when blockbuster finds out, there is already a shit ton of interest, and viacom has all of their profits
>desperately try every quarter to pay off loans
>1 mil loan becomes 3 mil then 5 mil, finally tens of millions of dollars are owed
>go chapter 11, file for bankruptcy
>Dish network buys Blockbuster Video, because they want to use the iconic Blockbuster Video logo to sell tv subscriptions, plus wants brick and mortar stores to sell tv subscriptions
>closes unprofitable stores that were still around after chapter 11 closings
>has 300 locations left
>all are profitable
>blockbuster is profitable as a whole again, especially in the North East
>fast forward 2 years to 2013
>Dish decides to go exclusively to streaming
>considers selling BBV
>no fewer than 3 companies are interested in buying
>but Dish wants to keep Blockbuster logo for streaming service, cant do that if they sell the company
>decide to liquidate stores, put 3000 people out of work, all over the rights to a logo
>tell employees they are being laid off AFTER telling the news networks

Blockbuster's problem was it was owned by two shitty corporations.
>>
>>84302159

Nah. Even as an adult I enjoyed browsing stores and libraries. Just not blockbuster because they are garbage.

That said I'd rather have had streaming at home and spent more time at the arcade. Gaming sucked at arcades but the atmosphere was great. Lots of whippets and chicks and sneaking cigarettes and that one kid who could freeze the SFII machine.
>>
>>84302159
Nigger I worked at Blockbuster right until I lost my job when it closed down, and we had Blu-Rays even since I started there. They cost more to rent than the DVDs, which we still carried too.

Was only there 5 months though. Really liked that job for minimum-wage part-time.
>>
>>84303017

Blockbuster was also pure garbage that ruined movies, quite literally.

They were the facebook of movies.

They fucked the independent movie scene, becoming essentially outlets for studios to dump 400 copies of Generic Blockbuster #246261 each week.

The editing they did on films and the strict content regulations coupled with them Wal-Marting out independent stores with good range fucking ruines 80's horror and action movies and also spawned the evil that was never ending DTV disney sequels.
