Saw him last week, he was really awful. He spent the first twenty minutes on a rant about transgendered people which was decently funny, then spent the remainder of the time "riffing" on the crowd and trying to do pure improv that really wasn't working. He was very clearly drunk as well, and none of his "banter" with the crowd was landing. Eventually people just started slowly leaving. Really fucking disappointed, spent a lot of money for our tickets and he's one of my favorite comedians but goddamn he was off his game. I sincerely hope the rest of his tour is going better

It's very rare that comedians hit it home every night. Laughter is an emotion and, just like everyone else, comedians want to be laughing at their jokes too, or else it's just acting/work. The thing is, saying a joke enough times, makes it stale to you, so a lot of comedians deliver canned jokes half-heartedly.

I've watched Dylan Moran's shows where he tells the same jokes to different audiences. You can just tell there's a visible difference in sincerity with the way he delivers it. First time, he's really into it, second time, he just wants it over with.

The best gig is really televised stand-up like late night for these guys, apart from the grueling schedule. At least there, they don't have to keep telling the same jokes over and over.
