When new comedians came onto The Tonight Show back in the 70's and 80's Johnny Carson would always be nice to them and hopefully invite them back for another performance. But a comedian never got to sit on the couch next to Johnny until maybe their third appearance with just two exceptions.
One was Steven Wright who Carson almost had to physically drag over to the couch and told him to come back like the next week and the other was Steve Martin.

The other being David Letterman.

I'm not sure that's true. I think Drew Carey and Ellen DeGeneres got called over on their first times.

And that comedian's name?
Albert Einstein.

And then a bald eagle landed on his shoulder and led them all in a rendition of America the Beautiful.

He went from being a poor black child to somehow becoming an entertainment icon, he's alright in my book.
I learned about my special purpose from him. He's okay in my book.

That's not true. Carson initially hated Steve Martin, and Martin was relegated to only performing when they had a guest host on the Tonight Show for yeaaars. Eventually Carson warmed up to him, but it was a huge uphill battle. He talks about about it at length in Born Standing Up, its a great read.

Is there a "sample" of his instructional video series available to "borrow"? I want to at least see one solid video before purchase. Born Standing Up was great but most of his movies are turds on a hot summer day.

Hearing his first Mantovani record was a turning point.
