It had plenty of competition, with Pirates released just 2 weeks before, and Cars 3, Transformers and Spider-Man coming out while it's still on theaters. I think that part of what Lex learned from the scoutship was that he had it backwards about metahumans being the basis of our "myths." In Wonder Woman, we found out for dead certain that the "myths" were once real and the gods weren't just overblown metahumans, but actual no-bullshit gods. How they came into being is still up for debate, but their absence, their "death," according to the Amazons' tales, left a sort of power vacuum that people can sort of step into under the right circumstances and essentially become an "echo" of that god, a conduit to their power.

It has the potential to make literally anyone larger-than-life and at least semi-mystical under the right circumstances. In the language of the board, at the right place at the right time, and from the right perspective, anyone can be a big guy.
