I meant why was a single episode that was really its own individual thing so much more memorable than more plot-driven main stories?

Why did it feel so much more touching and well-paced than other, more important, episodes?

>>84265606
Social Justice is just a buzzword to rile up liberals up so they can feel good about themselves being such good, progressive people.

What we need is a meritocracy and less regulation on what people are allowed to do. Liberals don't want that though.

In my life, I try to work towards social justice. I recognize my advantages in society and try to contribute to efforts, often monetarily, to help level the playing field. I feel this is both good and also in keeping with the Star Trek Spirit.

I don't see how a so-called meritocracy can work without a tabula rasa event. Otherwise, those who have gained territory and power in the previous non-meritocratic system would clearly have an unfair advantage, right?

Merit is not made of your advantages. Everyone has advantages. Those advantages don't mean shit if you haven't done anything. Merit is determined by what you have done.

What we want to eliminate is racist policies that discriminate against more qualified candidates.
>>
>>84267787
My dear brainlet, if you eliminate policies favoring specific persons after a long period of time where such policies have existed, the result is not equality nor equality of opportunity.

>riker:"whatever, just hurry up"
>*beams aboard and finds humans still frozen*
>data:"commander, we've found (fucking real living) human beings (from the fucking 20th century way the fuck out here still frozen - what are the fucking odds?!?!)"
>riker:"yeah so?"
>data:"permission to beam the aboard"
>riker: *sigh* "fine, just hurry up"

later

>crusher: "captain, data beamed over some humans from the 20th century that were somehow found way out here near the neutral zone and the poewr source kept them in tact"
>picard: "What?! this is an outrage! data get in here!"
>data:"I could not leave them their captain"
>picard:" data they were already dead! too bad they're alive now"

HOw fucking stupid and insane were the writers who wrote "the neutral zone" when it came to the b plot? Why does everyone except Data act like it's no big deal to find fully in tact cryogenically frozen human beings from the 20th century floating in a space satellite way out in the neutral zone and they show zero to little interest for these people's revival, nor the sociological and historical implications. Riker acted like he was fucking bored and I believe wanted to fucking phaser the thing.

They failed, because even though Bones is overtly racist towards Spock there is a pre-existing relationship built upon mutual respect.

The Borg are modified organics but they're still organics and their tissue is alive, they replace limbs and eyes but their head and torso is still intact. And Xenos don't need the host to be alive either, e.g. the dead Ox from Alien 3, even if they somehow detected it and killed the drone remotely (can they do that?), it would still be born from the corpse if they didn't destroy it in time.

Odo never told her about his feelings though (future Odo did), it's not really her fault for living her life instead of waiting on a weird alien to ask her out.

How? Why? The drones aren't aware during regeneration so they're unlikely to notice being infected personally and the hivemind isn't an all-knowing consciousness tracking things like the organ placements of all the drones.

And even if they spotted the facehuggers, they don't even care about armed humans walking about, I doubt they'd consider little stowaway bugs a threat until at least one Xeno was running around breaking stuff and killing drones on a large scale.

For that matter, I wonder if a drone having an alien burst out their chest would even kill them, as you say, it's barely necessary components at this point, they could probably just replace the ribs and sew him up.

The internal sensors of every Drone would realize that something was intruding and keep the Hivemind aware.
Besides that even a full blown outbreak wouldnt be a problem. Tenthousands of Drones not caring about their own Life going against Xenos ? Would be over damn fast. Hell they could even push out all the Oxygen in the ship just to get rid of them without even effecting the Drones. Which always keeps the Question why the Borg had air on their ships anyway ? >>84277117
I was mainly remarking on how cookie-cutter most of them felt. Kira does shit relating to the occupation with an old resistance member/love interest and it makes Odo feel bad. Obviously there were exceptions, but most of them felt really similar.

Honestly I think it was more of how completely uninteresting everything Bajoran was to me. I didn't care for their politics, their religion was just a bunch of our religions and wormhole aliens blended into one thing, and they just looked like normal humans but with scrunchy noses and an earring.

There's nothing unfathomably different from things that humans have done in real life. We've had occupations, theocracies, resistances, and all that jazz. The Bajoran concept didn't feel alien at all.

I actually really like TNG, even though a lot of the aliens look just like humans. That's because most of the "humans but with weird clothes" aliens were one-off episodes that were centered around foreign and interesting concepts.
>>
>>84277734
why do you say that?
>>
>>84277704
>The internal sensors of every Drone would realize that something was intruding
What are you basing this on? The Hansens messed with drones in stasis all the time and didn't get caught. I don't recall ever hearing a drone being referred to as having internal sensors, they're not ships.

>Tenthousands of Drones not caring about their own Life going against Xenos ? Would be over damn fast
I don't think it would though, the Borg only use melee tactics which would be ineffective against Xenos, and their blood would make assimilation impossible.

>Hell they could even push out all the Oxygen in the ship just to get rid of them without even effecting the Drones
I don't think Xenos need oxygen either

Drones were shown as pretty strong while not caring at all about their own survival so my bets would be still on the Drones.

In that brief time, I want to make a final appeal to you... to reach out to you... in the hope of avoiding a senseless tragedy. Even if you were to escape this board – and believe me, such an event is impossible – where would you go? Back to Rebbit? I can tell you that 4chan is a paradise compared to what would await you there. The Guls in charge of the occupation are not nearly as compassionate and forgiving as I am. I see you as an integral component of the important work we do on this station. The uridium you process today will lead not only to greater glory for /tv/, but to a better life on 4chan as well.

Ask yourselves why you are doing this. What do you really hope to accomplish? Do you really think you can harm Cardassia by your actions? If so, then perhaps you have been deluded by a few malcontents. Believe me, they're the ones who deserve to be punished, not you. I'm sure if you think about it... you would agree.

Well for one thing, it wasn't a civilian population. All the civilians were on a different planet, which Eddington showed Sisko at the beginning of the episode.

It's the equivalent of police firing tear gas at a criminal hideout. The police wouldn't be charged for that.

I understand if you think that what Sisko did was wrong, but you should understand that what he did was still legal. It's time for you to grow up and learn that legality and morality aren't always matching concepts.
>>
>>84279417
Eddington says right afterwards that Sisko was creating hundreds of thousands of refugees just like the caves if he continued attacking Maquis worlds, and the one Sisko picked was only chosen because it was the closes one, no other reason. Morality != Legality

He wouldn't be prosecuted because, even though it's morally dubious, he isn't breaking the law.

No, he doesn't. The word "civilian" is not used in any dialogue at all for that episode.

It's a deadly weapon, like tear gas. People can die if they choose to not evacuate. Other homes are available to them, but they'll still be forced out of their current homes.

Are you now so desperate to the point that you'll pretend that you don't see a moral problem with potentially killing people and taking away their current homes?

Do you think you could build a house with the kind of replicators you get in a room aboard a starship? Obviously the main issue with them is the dimensions of the area where the replicated matter appears, but I wonder if you can get around that, either by modifying where it beams the items to, or by cheating, like asking for a girder as long as it can make it, then pulling it out partially and asking the computer to extend it.

In the future of the enlightened Federation, criminals are considered people too. You still have to evict them because they're criminals, but you feel bad about doing it because you're evicting people.

I'm sorry you want Star Trek to be your fascist fantasy where criminals don't count as people. Maybe this is the wrong franchise for you.

Does it? If Starfleet crews had their immortality at stake while risking their life daily, it would've made starfleet service an infinitely deeper and impactful life decision than it is now.

>PICARD: Some people felt that it was necessary. But we have learned to detect the seeds of criminal behaviour. Capital punishment, in our world, is no longer considered a justifiable deterrent.

The Federation eugenically screens out criminals before they can become a prob

Defend their homes how? By killing any Cardassians who want to live on the same planet? That's crossing a line IMO. Planets are pretty big, so there should be enough room for everyone.
>>
>>84280966
Sisko doesn't feel bad. He laughs with Jadzia about the whole thing at the end of the episode.

And why would he? If the only people he attacked were terrorists then he

You might not feel bad about killing a terrorist in the present, but in the future humanity feels bad about even evicting a terrorist (without killing them).

That's what Star Trek is about. Gene's vision has us changing our standards and becoming more enlightened in the future. Honestly, this really might be the wrong franchise for you if you can't understand that.

Gene's enlightenment doesn't mean accepting terrorists. The terrorists were causing death and suffering, so Starfleet was authorized to stop the terrorists, and Sisko did so within legal limits.

Gene's enlightenment just means that Sisko feels bad about seeing the terrorists suffer, because terrorists are people too.

The Federation has decided to use that territory to stop a war. Isn't that a good thing?

Do you have brothers or sisters? Even though you have the same parents, you and your siblings are different people.

The change in the timeline caused Sulu's parents to have sex at a different time. A different sperm and (possibly) a different egg created a different person. He isn't the same entity as regular Sulu, but rather he's the genetic "brother" of regular Sulu.

So even though Regular Sulu is straight, there's nothing wrong with Brother Sulu being gay, because they are different people.

>Tried to gas the fucking Founders and collapse the Dominion

>>
>>84282468
When the war was over, England recognized America's independence. The Federation did not recognize the Maquis' independence.

If your government does not recognize your independence then it can still prosecute you for breaking your government's laws.
>>
>>84282543
yeah that's why they kept fighting...
>>
>>84273467
There's also the episode where they find that ancient space ship in the asteroid belt in perfect condition which would be a one-of-a-kind discovery for every archeologist on the Enterprise, but only Picard bothers to beam aboard (because he built bottle spaceships as a kid) and look at it. He doesn't even scan anything. Later they visit the ship a second time but only by chance and because they were stuck. Only then do they discover the ship's log which just sits there on the bridge.
>>
>>84282599
And that's why the Federation wouldn't stop trying to arrest them.

If they just wanted "to be left alone" then they should have tried to coexist peacefully.

Or move to another planet, which the Federation was offering them.
>>
>>84282782
yeah but they didn't want to be relocated. they wanted to maintain their independence and sovereignty over their territory which they felt was being threatened. they didn't want another planet the federation was offering them because that's like when america took over native american lands and gave them shitty reservations as compensation
>>
>>84282891

the native americans should have been more welcoming and tolerant
>>
>>84282891
But the Federation is post-scarcity, so the planets they would receive wouldn't be shitty.

So again, 3 choices:
>move to another planet (a really good one)
>stay where you are, but live peacefully with your new neighbors
>stay where you are, and kill your new neighbors
They chose poorly.
>>
>>84282946

>>
>>84282997
>what fucks the maquis over is the biogenic weapon sisko uses
He only evicted them from one planet.

What fucked the Maquis over was the Maquis themselves. They destroyed the Cardassians' sense of pride, so the Cardassians turned to the Dominion for help, and so the Dominion annihilated the Maquis.
>>
>>84282997

if the native americans had been more welcoming and friendly to the immigrants they would have learned from them and how to prevent spread of disease
