imagine being refn
imagine being refered to as the "director of Drive" on the posters of every movie you make
Is there anyone who unironically likes this movie or is it just memes? What do you get out of it? I thought it was awful but I'm open to change my mind

There will always be people who will act contrarian to feel better about themselves. Talk about how shit is very shitty to eat, you will find people who praises the shit as a food.

>>84259067
should watch this??
>>84259352
well yeah that goes without saying, I'm just wondering if there are people who actually got something out of this movie and what that something is
>>84259466
i liked it
it was visually impressive
and the way the "villain" was portrayed reminded me of no country for old men
now i wouldnt consider myself a enlighted genius

He actually didn't
they couldn't afford to shoot the rest of the movie

I love this movie
some pleb filters from last year.
>there are people on this board RIGHT NOW that think this kino is bad

go away paul
So what's the criteria for a pleb filter. A film with some artistic merit but enough technical failings to make it unenjoyable?

It has to be shitty enough to make people sperg out when you call it a pleb filter. That's literally it.
Pic related is one of the best pleb filters i know.
>A psychopath is scouring New York City gay clubs and viciously slaying homosexuals.
>Detective Steve Burns (Al Pacino) is ordered to don leather attire, hang at the city's S&M joints and keep an eye out for the killer. But as Steve becomes immersed in club hopping, he begins to identify with the subculture more than he expected.
>Meanwhile, Steve behaves distantly around his girlfriend, Nancy (Karen Allen), the police force's homophobia becomes apparent and the killer remains at large.

Last I heard they were actually in talks for a sequel. The movie just barely broke even or was just below breaking even. Though it will probably be a while until the sequel is made; apparently Duncan has another project he wants to do first.
>>84262599
yeah, sure buddy
>>84259067
this is just a movie that low IQ liberal arts morons pretend to like in an attempt to appear cultured with refined and unique tastes
it is categorically a shit movie and if you are touting your approval of it you are definitely a fucking faggot

Enter the Void is kino until you read the directors commentary on the film.
>>84264237
Enter the void was never kino. It meanders in pretty visuals with weak characters and relationship between said characters. Great for cid tho

>>84264237
what was on the commentary?
keep in mind that i didn't really care for enter the void, i'm going to assume gaspar noe said some pretty pretentious theories about the film/didn't fully plan out parts?
>>84259352
Fucking pleb. Shit is literally the kino of food.
>>84264237
>kino until
Impossible for a film to stop being kino from an element outside of the film, unless you're a redditor faggot
>>84265020
If you watch the film, it's sort of ambiguous as to whether everything is just an incredibly vivid DMT trip or the guy actually going through the cycle of death and reincarnation. At the end it doesn't really matter, because the entire film is basically played out as narration of the reincarnation process described in the Tibetan book of the dead
According to the director, it was all a DMT trip and he goes on to make a comment about how he's an atheist and religion is retarded. He also reveals that women in the blurry ending scene of the main characters "rebirth" is of his own mother, not of him in the next life being born to his sister.
Most people assume it's his sister because it follows directly after the insemination scene but instead the director claimed the scene was put there because he considers birth to be the "most terrifying experience a human can go through" and it has nothing to do with the previous scene.
After reading it I was thoroughly pissed off.
>>84264337
>>84264568
Not an argument.
>>84265781
it's almost like they put the directors best known movie on their posters
crazy right?
>>84260369
Awful flick. The stuff with the orcs was pretty solid but the stuff with the humans was so booring and lame. The pacing is a mess from the trying to shove in as many locations and characters from the games as posdible to pander to fanboys. The worst part was the lack of resolution. The only well written character dies, the main badguy just gets away, and it ends with blatant sequel bait.
>>84260228
Excellent
>>84263855
That's why it's a pleb filter. Film was pretty weird and enjoyable as hell because of the strange characters, story and overall feeling/atmosphere and the editing style. So many fantastic scenes and the ending was top-tier. Leading character was hilariously retarded and you could see that the actress and everyone involved put so much effort into it. Check out The Greasy Strangler and Beyond The Gates, if you hated them then seriously consider killing yourself or just stop watching films.
>>84259067
Everything on this list

It feels like a nightmare
it evokes that from me watching it
>>84268451
Jack and Jill is such a fucking shit movie holy shit, even for Sandler's standards. Can't believe I've seen it over 3 times. Also why are there FOUR fantastic FOUR movies?!
The Room was so fucking bad it was good, I took it to friends and we projected it on the wall. Everyone died of laughter.
HOWEVER Hobbit is fucking shit and that's fact.

>>84269496
I hate that he gets roped in with meme directors here. You always see shitposts about PTA, Villeneuve, etc and their having empty, "dishonest" films, and while for the most part those actually have some truth, PTA doesn't belong. And I think there are tons of directors better than him right now, but he is in the upper tier
>>84269526
Who do you think is doing better work now?
>>84259180
"What do you do"?

>>84259180
The whole thing is like a fever dream. Like Suspirira.
>>84260228
this bored me. maybe the book is better
I can help!
>>84269557
Actually now that I think about it, tons is an overstatement. Malick and Lynch are the first that come to mind, but the rest are very incomparable. Weerasethakul, Costa, Tarr, Reygadas; perhaps they are more talented than PTA, but it's really hard to compare them.
>>84270276
yeah probably because they are more ambitious, spiritual directors. maybe pta movies are better on a technical level and have great actors but are still very shallow and it feels like he doesn't have much to say with them
>>84270700
His films certainly are less ambitious. Film can be used as a medium of expression or entertainment, and in my opinion, PTA is the king of the latter. While The Master was certainly poignant and emotional, for the most part his films do have that technical achievement, and though they seem to lack that "saying something" the reality is they're more simply to enjoy. There's nothing wrong with that and the mistake I assume some viewers make is seeing PTA as an artist. He makes entertaining films at the highest level, and as we've seen with his latest two films, he can muster up some intriguing and impactful ideas as well

This film made the homosexual community FURIOUS and they said everything depicted about them (the hanky code, the club activities, and the promiscuious sex) was far from true -- they wanted Based Freidkin's head on a stake....
....then a decade later they declared it the most accurate depiction of pre-AIDS epidemic gay lifestyle in NYC.

>>84263855
"Tone was all over the place" is the most pleb criticism of movies. The best movies push boundaries. They can offer you an emotional range rather than just pushing and building on one thing. Tonal differences can often be used to compliment and enhance each other (like Pan's Labyrinth; the contrast between the gritty war drama and the magical child fantasy).
Obviously there are bad examples of this, but 90% of the time when people say this, it's usually a confession that they're too simple to deal with something complex
Its also become a way for plebs to sound like they know what they're talking about
