Honestly, the adventures of young Nathan Drake is a great way to kick off the movie franchise. I always hated the idea of them adapting the first game. This also helps them push the family narrative which has been plaguing them since the inception of a movie. Young Nathan, Sam and Sully on a fun and heartwarming adventure!

They specifically chose to go with the kid version so that they can make sequels for the next twenty years with the same actor if it's a success.

Why? We already know what he does as an adult and the worst thing they could do is adapt the games, since the games tell the stories better than any movie could. Telling new stories with the iconic cast of characters is the best way to do, and exploring young Sully and having Sam and Nathan together expands what they can do dynamically.
