Yes there already was a film and yes it was decent, but it doesn't compare to the novel and doesn't capture its magic.
So, I ask you /tv/, who could direct a Moby Dick film that could stand shoulder to shoulder with the original? Who would you cast?
While the Hobbit films make me dubious, if he could recapture that LotR magic, I'd like to see Peter Jackson give it a go. Give him the time and budget he had to do LotR and I reckon it could be great. Just make sure he sticks to one movie though and not fucking three.
As for casting I've found that difficult. Ahab needs to be perfect. What do you think?

did you not like moby dick 1956 ?
or in the heart of the sea?
Both are excellent sailor flicks and as far as life as sea is portrayed they did amazing jobs as showing a sailors life on a long journey.
The fact that you think itd make a good movie says a lot about you.
Have u even read it?
Make a porn movie about a black guy named mobey.
Cast the actors
Hollywood would just turn it into a cgi shitfest and shoe horn in a bunch of forced quips

They're good. I said that in my opening post. But Moby Dick has much more to it than just being about the lives of sailors.

I have. It would be difficult to make a good movie but given the right director it could be a classic.

"That whale sure is big"
>>84239476
>whale of a time!
>I've got a sinking feeling!
>something about the poop deck
>something about seamen
>cgi white whale ala life of pie
>black captain ahab.
>50% female sailors on a tall ship that maybe would have had 2 women at any time ever.
It would be awful
Ahab will be played by a female character like Emma Stone
After Earth

And there probably would be some kind of prophecy, the whale is actually a demon from hell bringing the doomsday or something
Of course this wouldn't be a good film if we take into account current cinematic trends and producers, but that doesn't mean that it could not, hypothetically, be a good film if those restrictions were removed.
refn would make a fine film
it would be like jaws but with more autistic characters
>implying modern Hollywood could even do Ahab justice, let alone the rest of the book

Impossible to make a particularly great movie about it, since most of what makes the book great is very specific metacommentary on literature itself. It would just be incoherent to translate that to film. Hence all the movie adaptations only adapting the plot (which is at best like 30% of the book). A long miniseries in Malick's style might kinda, sorta get the ideas of the book across, but why even bother at that point. People would hate the "asides" and "divergences" anyway, even though they're the entire point.
