I find that its a perfect add-on to the first
also the theme of nostalgia is good and strong
bit too many nods to the first one for my taste. But still solid
It was great. Only scene I didnt like was him saving Spud from suicide in the nick of time. Felt overly sentimental and on the nose. Great beginning with the work out room. Love that Spud, Sickboy and Rents have a somewhat happy ending and are all genuine friends at the end of the day.
>Choose screaming about abortion. Choose rape jokes, slut shaming, revenge porn, and an endless tide of depressing misogyny. Choose 9/11 never happened -- and if it did, it was the Jews.
I agree with most of what you say OP.
Only thing I really didn't like was the ending with the book.
It seems like any writer's masturbatory fantasy that no matter how shit you are at life and how much you have fucked it up, you can still salvage everything by simply sitting down and suddenly churning out a masterpiece, even if you flunked out of school and haven't written anything your entire life.
Whereas in real life, that never happened to anyone.

I didn't mind it. I thought a lot was done to diffuse the sentimentality, like having him throw up in the bag, Spud getting mad at Rent for saving him, etc.
I felt like it wasn't talked about much on here and the trailer was kino https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsozpEE543w

I thought it was pretty disappointing and banked too heavily on nostalgia. Couldn't care less about Begbie's irrelevant family melodrama either. Felt like it was !00% made for the money.
I thought it was an unnecessary sequel. There isn't really any sort of development that happens in the 20 years between films. Spud's an addict still, Sick Boy is still a pimp, Begbie is in prison, and Mark is still floating between periods of achieving positive life goals and fucking everything up. I also thought it was pretty lame how Spud becomes some sort of fucking Allen Ginsberg writer just so they can put excerpts from the actual novels into the movie. They also introduce Spud as being able to forge any signature, which apparently has no use in the modern world. What about forging celebrity signatures and selling them on the internet?
Like others said, there was too much nostalgia and call backs for me. Especially the recreation of the nearly getting hit by a car smile. When Mark and the whore go visit Kelly Macdonald and she tells Mark that the whore is too old for him, I thought it was pretty groan worthy. Also when they go visit the hiking path and Sick Boy and Mark just take turns summoning flashbacks of the awful shit they did in the first movie for the audience. There was also too many attempts to make the plot seem more "current" with all the texting and a few scenes using Snapchat filters.
Also I think the ending of the first film really pigeon-holed the plot of this film. They never really get over the fact that Mark stole from them and the movie turns into a slasher movie at the end with everyone running away from Begbie. I dont think sequels are really Danny Boyle's thing, and although this movie doesn't fuck up my liking of the first one, I really don't think it needed to be made.
