The way you get over something like this is by realizing that it's simply going to hurt, on almost a chemical level, for a certain finite period of time, and there's probably nothing you can do about it. It's more or less a biological process, a crude animal-level response to emotional trauma and sexual mishap. Your body is literally flooded by sad/pain chemicals and your neurology is twisted up. You have to understand that for a few months there will be a corner of your life that has that pain in it. Every day the pain will be a little bit smaller and eventually it will be completely gone. Second: you need to start doing things that will improve your life so that a year from now, you can genuinely say that even though the other thing happened, your life is now better than it was. You've got to start working on your career, your art, your body, whatever. Self improvement.

Have seen the same exact thing happen to a relative. His wife kidnapped their kids in the night after a judge issued an order expressly forbidding her from being with their kids unaccompanied by the father. Instead of having her put in jail for it he decided to use the possibility of a charge as leverage to gain a verbal agreement to return shared custody of the kids. In that time she managed to file a motion to be made primary guardian to a family court in a different jurisdiction from the ongoing custody dispute, and the court ruled in her favor. After that she got the judge to rule that the father couldn't visit the children or come within a certain distance of their new home with the mother or their new school. Despite already being ruled the sole guardian of the kids save for supervised visits he was not able to get a venue transfer of the proceedings initiated by the mother to the original jurisdiction, and basically never regained the level of custody he had been awarded to begin with. The kids ended up spending most of their time living with the mom for the rest of their childhood.


All could have been avoided if he pressed charges to begin with.
