I got caught up in it too, it was one of the times that helped me learn to never trust the media. I believed the initial reports that he was shot multiple times in the back while walking away from the cop. Every single time more evidence would come forward they would change their story.

In the end their lie was so massive and so complete that the real story, once it eventually came out, was almost literally the opposite.

At least some places like the WaPost and CNN actually did apologize for completely misrepresenting everything. But most people don't remember that, all they believe is the lie. There are millions of people that think Brown and Treyvon were completely innocent little kids who were executed by a racist whites just because they were black.
