I don't agree that Godard is a hack but, yes Bresson is superior.

His films have always striked me as an aesthetic exercise; they overflow with style but lack any real substance, even with all their playfulness. They're really pretty, though.
Pierrot is my fave. The ending is GOAT desu.
My favorite film is La Chinoise followed by Le Gai Savoir.
Godard is the man.

But I have. Most of his films just touch on their themes in a pretty sterile manner.
Personally, I think their quality, in terms of substance, comes from the playfulness and just how much he experiments with the film form.
That being said, he can be pretty /lit/ sometimes, although still not as good as Truffaut, generally speaking. His post-60's-70's stuff is pretty meh, too.
