I honestly think both series could work in the same continuity given that the Sopranos had its share of spooky surreal stuff (like pic related, the Virgin Mary and the Russian guy).

He got killed in the diner.. No way around it. When I first saw the series finale in 2007, I was convinced he was still alive and they just cut to black.. After I finished a rewatch a couple months ago I'm about 98% certain dude got iced in the final scene before the black cut.. The entire season led up to that moment.

Personally I kind of like to view it as his paranoia catching up with him and thinking anyone there could whack him at any given (given that most of the scene is from his perspective), I've really come to appreciate that David Chase left it open-ended for the viewer to determine Tony's fate.

Absolutely. It was masterfully shot and the initial issues I had with the finale in 2007 were not the same feelings I had this go around.. Alot of new found respect for the way Chase handled what could have been extremely easy to fuck up.

The real answer: he dies AND he lives, he gets shot in the diner AND he has a casual dinner with the famalam. It's the best of times, worst of times, encapsulated in a single scene, a single look, a single breath.

That's why it takes Meadow an eternity to park outside. If Tony is killed, she lives her life. If he survives, she lives his life. The truth is both occur. That is the Italian way. That is the curse, like what Tony says AJ inherited.

Tony is and will always be in purgatory. Purgatory on earth. An animal who sees beyond the trees, but remains in the trees, more comfortable there, where it's a lower frequency, into old age, where he sometimes glimpses the light beyond the trees, like a beacon in the dream episodes.

That's the truest ending Chase could deliver. Tony doesn't have a single ending, because he never began as a person, only as an animal. That's the ironic significance of the Journey single. There was no journey. Pure destination. Pure purgatory. Don't stop believin'. Nostalgia as a cheap candle, as Tony sits on his ass, believin' in nothing 'cept the everlong present. An ape.
