All cartoons these days are basically entirely automated. They draw it digitally using predetermined assets and have an algorithm that matches words to mouth movements, etc. Which is why modern simpsons looks so weird

Any good reference for how they animate The Simpsons and Family Guy these days? I know somewhere mentioned that hand drawing is still a big part of It, but the generally exceptional adherence to staying on-model even during in-betweens makes me wonder how many shortcuts they take. It seems pretty obvious that at least Family Guy relies on 3D models for certain BG effects, and that South Park is done in Maya (which as strange as it seems makes sense for imitating the paper cut out effect and easily constructing the show's backgrounds in short periods of time).

This sort of stuff is what makes early Simpsons look so good, as well as handdrawn animation in general.
Half of the fun of cartoons is visual gags, things should stretch and expand. Animators are too lazy nowadays to do this.
Look at Ren and Stimpy. They never make the same facial expression twice. It's always a fresh gag.
