They almost certainly hired them because of track record of success and name recognition. That was where there thought process began and ended. They just wanted to slap those director names on whatever the business side wanted the product to be with little to no meaningful input from the chosen directors. The Venn diagram for fans of Lord and Miller and Star Wars is probably more people than you'd think. I can only speak for myself, but I love their comedies and I think their take on a Star Wars movie would be fun and refreshing.

That said, I get where Disney is coming from- they have a whole universe with continuity and obsessive fans that complain about EVERYTHING, so if they say/do the smallest thing that deviates from the cannon, or flies in the face of upcoming plot lines it could be very harmful.

People get mad when the tension in the film is undercut by quips. It shows that in the moments, the characters don't care about what's happening. So why should we? During the Civil War fight, the teams were joking with each other and having friendly banter. As much as I loved GOTG2, there were a few too many times where a character would have a moment of dramatic struggle and there would be an inappropriate quip.

The right way to inject humor into a normally sad moment is like when Mantis feels Drax's emotions. It's tragic because it shows how sad he is all the time, but it's also a bit funny because of the acting style of Mantis.

TLDR: Quips shouldn't go where they don't belong.
