They're a big highlight of late 80's/early 90's horror. The first two are amazing, lots of fun and creative horror that captures the 'feeling' that particular era had (you know how they would make really gory and violent adult films, but you could also buy a lunchbox and watch the cartoon when you get home). I only watched one of the later ones but it was a pile of shit, so even though I'm curious about them, I'm not too keen on watching.

If you like the Hellraiser films I'd recommend some with a familiar feeling. Scanners, Phantasm, Videodrome and The Fly.

first two are typical slasher flick with cool aesthetic and bdsm themes, the third one changes Pinhead a bit and makes him much more lovely, it's also a bit worse in acting/writing department, but it's so fucking schlocky and reeking of the 80's that makes it so much fun and it was better than it had every right to be. Also, Motörhead at the end was lovely.

Haven't seen the rest, but will do. I heard they're shit and they didn't have any ideas in which route the franchise is going to go, but fuck it.

How do they differ outside of bdsm themes slapped on it? The sequel takes a different route in focusing on their world a bit more, but the first one is a typical slasher with a little eroticism in play.

1 is amazing. A horror story where the Cenobites are just a plot device. 5 is a separate story but in the same vein and I love it.

2 and 4 are decent enough but as long as the focus of the flims are Cenobites they will struggle to elevate themselves.

Watched a movie called We Go On. Saw something like the puzzle box and instantly wanted it to be a horror film with Cenobites as a plot device. Turned out pretty shitty.

Cee Lo Green was great in it.

The first one is a twisted love story about a wife wrestling with her decision to return to a secret lover. The Cenobites and their lore is just a tool to explore this relationship.

The joke is that with heightened sensation over an infinity of perceived time, ultimate apathy and the total lack of sensation is inevitable. This is sort of mentioned by Frank Cotton at the pleasure he felt being able to feel pain again after his nerves regenerated which would imply that after a while there, you just stop feeling anything at all regardless of what tortures are inflicted.

Hellraiser Revelations was pretty good. It kept fairly true to the original with its own little twist. The incest was also shocking. I think the problem with it was that Doug Bradley didn't play Pinhead this time around. However the new guy wasn't bad either. It just took a bit to get used to him.

none of the sequels are worth watching

like, just a year ago i noticed how they kept making these movies post hellraiser 3 , they got a good half a dozen more... welp there was a reason it never made a beep on my radar during all those years. even as a fan, as someone game to work with shit material and focus on just the parts that are stimulating my creativity ... that shit was unwatchable. damn. eh, it is what it is. i heard they were to use the guy who made that french horror movie, what was it called... anyway they dumped him.. no idea if this franchise is salvageable .
