He wasn't. Shemp was among the most liked Stooges only topped by Curly.
Joe Besser was the most hated. He added nothing to the act and ruined the dynamic because he refused to take part in the slap stick gags.
He also brought his same stale gimmick of being a giant effeminate baby which was never funny even when he did it alone.
Curly Joe wasn't bad he just had no presence. By the time Curly Joe joined up everyone was too old to do what they use to.

Who the hell hates Shemp?
I know I'm in the minority for liking Shemp more than Curly (I think he's a far better comedic actor), but I never heard anybody saying they hated Shemp. Everybody just hated that fat faggot that came along afterwards.
