"Star Wars" is the best because it was a coherent story that began and ended. It also has some great moments in it that actually fit the emotional state of the characters and aren't completely forced for sake of imaginary continuity.

Everything else is hot garbage, except John Williams' score.

Just in the past year or two it's been hitting me how the exchanges between Luke and Yoda are among the best material anywhere in the film series.

However my personal favorite dialogue delivered anywhere is Palpatine setting up his trap during Jedi. The delivery is so deliciously villainy:

Jedi is a great movie and is automatically better than everything that followed by default. If you disagree, you are wrong. You are not scoring "serious appraisal of the entire cycle" points by ranking Jedi better than any of the subsequent flicks. Ewoks are a bit silly but do not significantly damage the film in the way that "midichlorians" significantly damage the mysticism (the fantasy element of the story) about the force, reducing it to a genetic trait-thing.

That said R1 was fairly good. I got

Return. Despite the Ewoks that film has the core of what SW is all about, the fight between good and evil, between hatred and love, the fight against anger. The fight between Luke and Vader is the best fight in the series because it perfectly encapsulates this and is not just a cool fight.
