Yes. Letters from Iwo Jima for example is great.

True kino of the highest caliber. Of course J. Edgar was a trainwreck, but he directed Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Letters from Iwo Jima, Flags of our Fathers, Gran Torino, and Changeling in a row. He's a beast as a director. Play Misty for me and a ton of other shit. He's amazing.

>>84183704
Yes, in fact he makes great movies. He's the only mainstream director with any grasp of classical aesthetic values, and he proves their continuing validity in film after film - nothing he does seems archaic, yet all of it is recognisably in the classical tradition. When he's gone, American cinema will never get over it, so we need to support everything he does while he's still around, it seems to me.
>>

The man.
>>

ofc he does
he's one of the best directors working today

This was the first Cowboy Clint movie I ever watched properly, actually. I'd probably caught some parts of the other movies on telly at some point or another, but never watched them completely. I think it coloured my perception of all the other ones to quite a large degree because I never liked them anywhere near as much.

It's still my favourite Western.

Costner can't act his way out of a wet paper bag.

>but whaddabout Dances with-

That role and the film in general was tailored just for him. He sucks in literally everything else, and what he's okay in is just a derivative of his DWW role.

>>84185879
What pisses me off is that the original WAS a womans movie. Eastwoods character was a piece of shit. The only characters that displayed strength were women. Idk how that is lost on ppl

I don't know. I've only seen a handful. I like his old westerns.

I've seen American Sniper and I would be begrudgingly say it was a good movie despite the fact that Republicans jizz their pants when talking about it.

But I haven't seen the others. I'm okay with propagandist intentions behind art, but you have to bury the hook a bit. Eastwood has the subtlety of a brick through a window when it comes to propaganda.

I intend on some point watching Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. I suspect they'd be good, but also contain distinct political preachiness.

You kinda have to respect his decision making process when it comes to picking what projects to work on. He's famously gone on record saying that for most of his career his only requirement for acting in/directing any movie is that it's something he'd want to watch.

Basically everyone told him not to make "the orangutan movie" but he did it anyway and now we have Every Which Way But Loose.

If he'd listened to other people, we'd all have lost something.
>>
>>84183704

You had to be here in 2014.

Real talk: it's actually a poorly written movie. It's right on the line between wanting to be a film about PTSD and asymmetrical warfare, and being an action flick about Killing The Badguy. This does undeniably compromise the movie.
As far as being a commercial success goes, American Sniper worked because most movies that hit on PTSD and asymmetrical warfare try to be award bait (Hurt Locker), are written by People Who Don't Get It (Hurt Locker), and target non-military audiences (Hurt Locker).

There's not preaching or anythng in Letters from Iwo Jima. It's the most nuanced American war movie about WW2 about the losing side I've ever seen.
>>
>>84184119
J. Edgar has some good parts to it. For one, I reckon the performances by Dicaprio and Hammer are pretty good: both of them give quieter performances than we're used to seeing from them.

>>
I wasn't the only one laughing during Gran Torino?
>>
>>84194925
Yes and no. A huge problem is Eastwood's refusal to make a moral judgement about J. Edgar's career, and the effect that he had on American society, positive or negative. But it's kind of nice in how it portrays the forty year relationship between him and Clyde Tolson. It's also quite explicit in how it portrays the guy. He was a conflicted homosexual and crossdresser, he did have a weird relationship with his mum, and Eastwood doesn't shy away from that, which probably differentiates him from other Republicans.
>>
>>84183704

He has made many good ones. His most recent work is kinda disappointing, though. "Hereafter," "Invictus," "Sully," were all kind of snoozy feel-good "gimme a pity Oscar please" stuff.

Any guy who made "Unforgiven" is alright in my book, though. There are also a lot of movies where he's just an actor and he knocks it out of the park. "Dirty Harry," "Escape from Alcatraz," etc. Also many of the movies from his prestige era like "Million Dollar Baby," "Gran Torino," and "Mystic River" are great as well.

You kind of did it backwards, dude. Unforgiven works best as a deconstruction of the Western, not its archetype.

Still glad you liked it, though. It's a great movie.

One thing people don't know is that he actually wrote the music for a lot of his films. He's always been good with music though. He made this film in the eighties called Honkytonk Man, were he portrays a dying Country Western singer- pretty nice music. And then there was his Charlie Parker biopic, where he had a really good feel for the man's ouevre, and seemed to direct the film in a manner that mimics the feeling of jazz. And many others. Pretty talented guy desu.
