I liked the theme of the season. I liked the chaotic nature of the events feeling almost unbelievable at times- that it's easier to make up some fiction of how the events transpired than it is to believe what actually happened.
\I just don't like that the reason a lot of it is unbelievable is because the characters are inconsistently written.

Emmit was probably the best written out of everyone. The cops show up because of his brother, and he decides to end the feud to get his brother off his back. He kills him- unintentionally sure, but he doesn't call an ambulance, he doesn't try and stop the bleeding, and he calls VM to cover everything up because his business is more important than his brother. In the end, Emmit has a chance to repent and chooses instead to walk to VM- as much as he tries to turn things around in Episode 10 (taking Meemo's gun, asking Nikki to shoot him), he ends up destroying everything around him. When he returns home, he is comfortable enough sitting with his family at Thanksgiving dinner- looking a forever disabled Sy in the face, smiling as if nothing had happened- all by doing exactly what VM and Goldfarb told him to do.

Sy on the other hand made very little sense. At once he was a pawn in VM's scheme, collateral damage between Ray and Emmit, and a mover and shaker for Stussy lots. if the point of his character was that he becomes regurgitated by Varga, there was no need for him to be somebody that "took care of things" for the company. A lot of what Sy does is just mindless meandering in the first few episodes that moves the plot forward (e.g. the hit and run). Why they wrote him as a confident character only to have him be completely useless and terrified makes little sense- the effect was too jarring.

I wont even get into how badly Nikki was written. Suffice it to say she was at once a scheming mastermind (Episode 9, half of this episode) and a complete bumbling idiot (her death).

In the first scene in east berlin the officer is asking if the man he's interviewing is Yuri Gurka and if he strangled his girlfriend Helga Albracht. That was 1988 and Yuri was supposed to be a 20yo emigre. The guy isn't the same Yuri from the rest of the show, but his shoes are wet, implying he was the one that killed her and left her body on the bank of the spree.

So if that's the case why did YHWH give him a message from Helga and the rabbi if he possibly didn't kill her and certainly didn't kill any of the people from the massacre that the rabbi was all about (it happened like 250 years ago)?

One of the best comments here quite early on in the season mentioned that there are a lot of things this season that play like Schrodinger's cat. It ended up being the most important concept of the season.

Gloria is the main Schrodinger's cat of the story. She starts out being both married and not, being both chief and not, being feminine and not, her case is constantly "solved" while it's not - and of course, electronics often don't seem to recognize her. It's only when Winnie looks into the box in episode eight and gives her self-worth that she stops being ambiguous and becomes confident.

Varga is her antithesis because he abuses this ambiguity to his advantage, to not be on the radar, to not be noticed anywhere. He exists, but he feeds lies to people to pretend that he doesn't, and so he doesn't.

In the end, Gloria and Varga end up in Schrodinger's box together in a perfect final scene - and until someone opens that door, they're both right.

I am truly baffled as to why this is even a discussion. Emmit's brother tried to ruin his life. Nikki was helping Emmit's brother. Varga was also using Emmit. This wasn't somebody getting their just desserts--the ending of The Departed is a good example of that. This was the writers feeling like they were obligated to kill a character off, because every major character not on the police force or related to police officers has to have a shitty life.

It's a lose-lose situation, and not a well-executed one either. A Serious Man is a good example of a guy getting fucked over cosmically through no fault of his own. This season of Fargo was just shit writing. I just can't feel any bit of sympathy for Nikki or Ray. They were acting like pricks and they got what they deserved. When he is in the bowling alley purgatory, Ray Wise tells him he has a message from Helga Albracht and shows him a vision of the same woman from that scene.

More importantly, I think, is that the officer saying his explanation is a "story" and that we are here to tell the "truth". Except the guy is obviously not Yuri Gurka, so his "story" is more like the truth and the Officer's "truth" a story.
It sets you up for a show that is presented as a "true" story. Shortly after "this is a true story" come up on the screen, but the word true fades first. I think it's supposed to be something about the nature of truth in this show, but that may be going too deep.
