Major 80s backlash happened. The happy, bright, sharp energy got shunned and for some reason people embraced edginess, 70s folk fashion and guitar-heavy rock and pop. When Britney Spears charted and was selling out hair metal-style live shows you could tell the 80s was sneaking back in. Ten years after Britney we're back to jean jackets and big hair.
