It's a stylistic addition that pays homage, just like how one henchman dies, the police protagonists are super wholesome, and the big bads come from out of town.

I thought that scene was really cool, there was definitely something going on between the two.

I really wanted a more satisfying conclusion to the whole Ray Wise thing. I wanted Nikki to deliver the "message to the wicked" to Varga and instead she gives it to Emmit of all people AND gets interrupted. I felt cockblocked. She deserved to die after going for vengeance rather than killing "the wicked" Varga.

Also I saw people suggesting that Yuri would be given a second chance as well and wound up working with Nikki and Wrench and I thought that was stupid but now I wish it had happened.

Rewatching this season from the beginning is so heartbreaking. Ray, who I always saw as a lowlife loser, is genuinely just trying to be even with his OLDER brother who knowingly fucked him over and never admitted it.

See I don't understand how someone can think that. Sy starts out as manlet incarnate - butch haircut, hummer, power stance - it's all a facade. That front dissipates when he understands that Emmit is turning on him. He goes from hatable to sympathetic.

Nikki literally gets (wrongfully) cleansed of her sins, but her human nature prevents her from being the benevolent messenger she was meant to be. She genuinely loved Ray, something you couldn't have thought at the beginning.

There's a lot that changes rather naturally, and I think that comes through on second viewing.

They had the opportunity to have the modern setting factor in more than it did. I would have liked less of the biblical motifs from the first season and instead a focus on the idea of modern technology complicating good old fashioned police work. It was all set up with Gloria the Luddite, Emmit as a rich business owner and Ray as a 'pitchfork peasant', the seemingly old school Varga and his ridiculously high-tech operation. All of these could have developed into a No Country style look at how crime has advanced while attitudes haven't, but instead these threads developed into grudge matches and divine judgement, the same narrative convenience that worked the first few times when it was a surprising and fun twist on the movie, but has now disappointed an audience who has been on this ride twice before and was hoping for something more complicated. That's how I feel at least, I might be way off base here.
