The prequels were much better written, they had actual characters and story, not a bunch of memes and one-liners that lack any emotion or coherence. Luke is a cliched everyboy "hero" that goes through an absurdly rapid transformation between the fifth and the sixth episodes. Anakin's emotional instability and his exposure as a psychopath are gripping; and his doomed relationship with Padme is touching. In the "original trilogy" Han, Leia, Darth Vader and Obi Wan are complete meme characters, nothing about them is remotely believable or human. And why doesn't anyone care about deaths in those movies? Leia's planet destruction, Luke's stepparents' death, all of the blown up rebels--the list could go on--all the deaths are forgotten moments later.

As for direction, the movies from the "original trilogy" were mostly incoherent, badly edited and full of logical problems. The prequel trilogy is a work of a "vulgar auteur".

I feel neutral about the series overall, and honestly don't care about trolling or contrarianism. Here are my sincere rankings:

1. "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones"
2. "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace"
3. "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith"

Eh I'm mostly sleep deprived and trying to stay awake at work. Nobody on /tv/ is being paid by Disney to talk shit about or defend Disney IP.

If you're subscribed to /r/prequelmemes or buy into any of that reddit meme wars shit than you actually are a willing participant in a budgeted Disney marketing campaign. Liking and defending the prequels is still supporting Disney.

My argument is that the prequels are bad and poorly-executed movies compared to almost any movie. They are historically notable for how bad they are.

And they aren't canon.

Personal rankings:

V=IV>VII(fight me)>VI>III>RO>I>II

The drop-off from Empire/Hope to TFA is significant. TFA has major problems, but I enjoyed the new characters. Jedi's first third is a mess, but the Luke/Vader/Sheev plotline pays off. Jedi and RO have the best space battles, Sith is fun cheesy schlock, and Phantom has the best lightsaber duel (in terms of realistic choreography).

I don't have any hate for the prequels, but I do feel they were poorly executed. TFA was sadly a "testing the waters" sort of film pumped full of nostalgia, and RO was the same thing but with worse characters. IV and V are the only "quality films" in the entire franchise, but all are enjoyable on some level (except Clones; Clones can fuck off).

I work in production. I have experience in construction, set dressing, props, AC, electric, and associate producer credits. I've spent my whole life studying movies and 10 years working on them. And in thematic and conceptual ways it gets the OT right way better than TFA.

All Lucas had to do with the prequels was tell the same story in reverse. He failed to use the prequels to "inform" the old trilogy as well as completely botching the look and feel of Star Wars. While the prequels featured Yoda and Obi Wan, we should have had more contact with characters like Mon Mothma (although she had a deleted scene) and maybe a young Lt. Reiken. The story line needed help too. Instead of "Trouble on Naboo...a planet no one has ever heard of before" the plot to Episode 1 should have been "Trouble on Alderaan." You see, when we rewatch A New Hope and see Tarkin destroy Alderaan we should watch that scene with new eyes. Why do we care about Alderaan again? In these ways, the lack of character introduction, to say nothing of development, as well as the plot weakness made for terrible prequels.

Also, he got it in his head that he was making these films for 12 year olds. Really? Sure, but not exclusively.
